Emergent vegetation, high water and a reduction in water clarity very abruptly shifted the walleye bite into over-drive this past week, particularly in shallow water. The most important thing right now is to select a lake and a handful of spots on that lake, devise a plan and stick with it.
Persistence and patience will out weigh anything you do with a rod in your hand right now. The mid-day bite has been best but there are opportunities at low light too. Cast crank baits or pitch plastics and repeat this process over and over until you put something together. Remember, adjustments in retrieval speed or color can make a big difference too.
The pan fish bite has remained steady in the area as well. Both crappies and bluegills are being found in 2 - 5' of water and also out a touch deeper in 7 - 15' of water. Searching for these fish with small crank baits like a Salmo Hornet or a beetle spin is one option, but you can also pitch a jig and plastic, minnow or leech if you're looking to work an area a little slower.
