Anybody have any luck with floating (balsa) jig heads (with leeches or minnows)on about a 3' leader? Had quite a bit of luck on Leech and Vermillion in past years.

I use them for deep walleyes when they are suspended up 4 or 5 feet off the bottom and use a leader lengt accordingly

Pretty much a main stay in my area. I love a leech or floated crawler on a phelps or Northland floater. Spin n glows are also a very effective option.

I'll be thinking of you all Sat morning when I'm stuck in central Illinois. I sure do miss Minnesota, land of my boyhood.

Not necessarily a floating jig head but I have had good luck on deep weed lines with short snells and a gumdrop floater and leech or night crawler.

Yip, I pretty much will have one on too. Half Face Jig on one rod with an original or Wobbler floater on the other. Can't wait! Good luck to all.

Yep, I prefer the gumdrop floaters too, my biggest problem is keeping enough in my tackle box.

why is it that everytime I use floaters all I catch is Bullheads? I don't get it. How do you fellas rig them. Do you use three way swivels with a weight on the bottom? Thanks.

Swivel to the line with a bullet (1/4-1/2 oz) weight above it and 3' mono leader tied to the jig (loop knot is what my granddad called it) is all I've ever used. If using a minnow, be sure to hook it top to bottom so it doesn't trail belly up (since the weight will bounce off the rocks -- in theory -- as opposed to getting hung up between them -- which happens a LOT)so the jig will be upside down (hook facing down).

If all you're getting is bullheads, your leader may not be long enough.

I always lindy rig it with a 4-6 foot snell. I hook the minnow from the bottom up through the head. The hook hang up. Caught lots of fish doing this....
