I know that quite a few guys fish in some very deep water.....anywhere from 100-250 feet. Now this may be a stupid question but what type of ice fishing rods and reels are you using. All of the reels I have only hold about 100-110 feet of line. Is there some special rod and reel to use for this type of fishing that I'm missing??

I use a baitcaster off my summer rod on a lake trout rod made by jason mitchelle.

Yeah I use my open water walleye or bass reels for lakers in deep water. No way a small ice reel could consistently handle the runs lakers make when they get near the hole.

Line stretch at those deeps is unmanageable with mono. Years ago we used a oval spool that you hand wrapped steel line around.

Today we use a super braid on a levelwind. Much much easier and better. Fishing for lake trout at those depths requires heavy lures not just because of the depth but currents too.
With a larger profile and 2-3 oz lure plus cut bait your going to need a lot of back bone in a rod.
