My son has a 2000 Jeep Wrangler, 4x4 4.0 with a 5 speed. He can't drive it cause rear end makes so much noise. Anyone out there have a ball park figure on how much it would cost to put new rear end guts in something like that?

I wouldn't have any problem getting a used rear end. Johns auto parts has been pretty good for us and not to far away from you. Have you tried to identify if its an axle bearing or something in the pumpkin itself.

Too many donuts-the side gears are shot!!! J/K lol. grin

Get her up in the air and see where the noise is coming from. It could be a bad u-joint or brakes too.

I second the used rear end. I tried to look up a price at car - part . com and there are several options for that year. It seemed like they were running around 5-700 depending on what you got.

Having it rebuilt is definitly the most solid way to do it, but expect double the price of throwing a yard part in.

I third the used unit. keep in mind its already a 9 year old vehicle so spending big bucks isnt the greatest idea.

while you have the used unit on the floor, toss on a new set of shoes (pads?) and a fresh set of shocks and call it good.

Thanks you guys....I don't know if the mechanic will go for that, but I'll run it by him this morning.

I talked to the guy that does my mechanical work and he said he had already started looking for the used stuff...said he would do it in the most economical way he could.

I actually prefer installing the used stuff. New is always nice but if I can get the job with used than why not.

The mechanic said he couldn't find any used stuff, said all he could find was rebuilt, I mean all the way from the brakes through the axels to the gears and whatchamacallits in the pumpkin....the price was staggering!

Asked the son to do some looking around and he found a very reputable garage in St. Paul that fixed the jeep at almost 3/4 less the cost of the above. Whew! Since I'm footing the bill, that was a welcome relief! 'Now we'er thinking with our dipsticks....Jimmy!'

I would stay away from the first shop for life! Its not hard to find used parts.

Especial since the CARS program. There is a healthy supply of used parts as many salvage yards jumped on that opportunity!

Well, my son did some snooping around and came up with a Jeep repair shop over in St. Paul. It's just off Snelling and Igalhart. They got his Jeep into the shop (The first mechanic towed it over there for him) and they had him fixed up and out the door in a day!

The vehicle had a broken bolt and a cracked bearing housing in the rear end, the guy said it was an odd type of break down?

Anyways, the price was waaaay less then the first guy was gonna charge. The guys are good, professional, knowledgable, friendly and their prices don't seem to be bad either.

Any 4x4 repairs needed, especially in Jeeps, off Snelling and Igalhart in st. Paul.
