I'm new to the forum, but have fished Trout in the past and Oriniak, has anyone fished Merritt? My son and I were looking for a lake off Trout to try other than Oriniak. Thanks. Mike

Can't help ya on Merit, sorry. As far as other lakes around trout, just scroll back through this topic. We've had discussions on little trout, pine, chad, buck, western, & gowan. They're all right around trout

Mike, I have walked into Merritt twice and just fished from shore, nothing caught. I have never been inclined to carry in a canoe. Reports of it being very shallow and subject to freeze kill and that it just isn't as beautiful (my opinion) as the other lakes helped me with that decision. The hike is OK, evidence of wolves and I scared up a moose or better said the moose scared the daylights out of me. Depending on how much help your son can be could help with the decision. Little Trout has easy access and Pine is a nice lake with an interesting wilderness paddle access. The other lakes will take a little more effort. When do you go in? Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the replies, I was at Trout and Oriniak about 3 1/2 weeks ago. Plan on going back in August. Trying to put the trip together that's why the question. I think we'll walk into Merritt to take a look, (my son's 17 and can be a big help), and paddle around for a day. He's interested in going back to oriniak so I assume we'll hit it again for a day. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

What do you want to fish for in August? Walleyes, pike, bass? If you are looking for some fun fishing out of a canoe Little Trout for Pike and smallmouth bass should be good in August. Toss spinner baits or crank baits towards shore and you should hit something. Nice walleyes in there but most of my walleye fishing in little trout is in May/June. You could walk into Gowan if you want an adventure from there too. If you want a nice paddle you could go into Pine Lake. Fishing is usually good in there as well. If you want to try for largemouth take the portage from pine creek into Chad.
How did you do in Oriniak a few weeks back? We did so well in little trout that we didn't hit that lake. We usually fish it and do well.

Sled,
I'm in the group with FisherKing. I'm sure Senko's work great for bass on Little Trout. Those take a little more patience and generally we are after whatever happens to be lurking around a piece of structure. A Minnow Rap seems to attract bass, pike and walleyes. We tend to like to pound the shore and get a variety of fish. Nothing wrong with the brwon carp but the big pike and the stray walleye get us really excited! (Except for B@ssmaster) Although he got pretty excited over his 28 inch walleye out of Pine last year.

The recent "blog" about Pine and Crab and other lakes of my youth has motivated me to consider a trip there in early September from Colorado. But I need a little logistical help/advice:
1. Is it possible to rent a Kevlar in/around Tower or Lake V. or do I need to go over to the Ely area (my two back operations and various other orthopedic maladies won't permit an aluminum canoe).
2. Is there someone on Lake Vermillion who might transport us and our canoe to/from the Trout Lake portage for a fee?
3. Does the Trout Lake motorized portage transport canoes and gear?
Visiting these lakes is on my so-called "bucket list", and I am thinking I'd better act sooner than later. Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I fish with them cause Im impatient. Usually when we fish little trout with them, we get a hit or fish on almost every cast.

Not sure about #1. I have rented 25HP and aluminum canoes from Mocassin Point and plan to again this August. I would call them for information about the kevlar. I know that they can take care of #2 and I think its about $30 each way for a canoe. As for #3 I can't think of any reason they would not transport your canoe on the motorized portage. I'm sure they will accept your dollars. Not sure what the transport fee is this year. What do you recall from fishing Chad & beyond?

I have heard the rumor that Mocassin Point was closed but have called and confirmed that it is a rumor... and the folks at MP are not pleased about it being circulated. They have moved to a location very near where they were previously, I think some of the other folks posting to this site can confirm this. I called MP concerning this issue about 2 weeks ago and have reserved boat, motor, canoes, etc.
