I worked black Friday from 5:30am to about 3pm, when I left work I noticed how nice a day it was and that the wind was perfect for a new area I’d gained permission to hunt after the rifle season had expired so I boogied to my stand and settled in about 3:30. I was beat from working all day and honestly was just looking for some “me time” in stand, hoping that a doe would come by and I could end my season before it got real cold.

About 30 minutes before last light, I caught some movement behind and spotted a squirrel coming down a tree, looking beyond the squirrel I noticed more movement it appeared to be a deer heading my way, (thank you Mr. squirrel). I grabbed my bow and readied myself just incase. The brush was so thick I couldn’t really tell if it was a buck or doe. As it moved in I realized it had a big body and then I seen his head gear. One quick glance told me it was a shooter, from that time forward I never looked at his head again. “Pick a spot, stay calm” “Pick a spot, stay calm” “Pick a spot, stay calm”

The only problem was that I had no shooting lanes cut in the area he was walking, and he was heading to my downwind side. as he got within about 25 yards I drew my bow. Looking for a clear lane to catch him in, I only saw one opportunity that was about a 1’ wide at 20 yards. At full draw for about a minute he stepped into that shooting hole and stopped perfectly. I didn’t see my arrow fly but herd an impact - his reaction wasn’t a typical leg kick and death sprint. He ran about 30 yards and got out of my view and everything got silent,,,,, did I miss?? [PoorWordUsage]??? I started doubting myself, looking for my arrow stuck in a tree,,, and then the most awesome sound of crashing branches and thrashing leaves I’ve ever heard!!!

Fist pumps were flying!!!!

When I recovered him I had no idea that he was that big.

I believe if not for Mr. Squirrel, he would have snuck in on me and either winded me or busted me before I’d even seen him.

I’ll never forget the sights, the sounds, and the feelings and hope everyone gets an opportunity to experience the ultimate high.

Brainerd/Merrifield Area. bigist deer ive ever seen from stand by far!

That's some of the best "me-time" a guy can get right there. Congratulations on very nice buck - he's got some character for sure.
