Was curious what typical ice is in late december... Are people usually driving out by then?

Thanks.

Some areas yes and some no. I'd say that so far this appears to be a good ice year on Vermilion, but I would watch the forums and ask questions about the specific area you plan to go.

There are certain areas on the lake that never have "good" ice. Areas such as Oak Narrows will freeze over, but not usually have good enough ice for vehicles. There are other areas around the lake that have traditionally bad ice. When in doubt, drill holes along your route to make sure there is enough ice. We should continue to make good ice as long as we don't get a blanket of that insulation white stuff.

Intersting discussion, as we have never travelled up to our cabin in winter, but are considering it this year. We are on an island directly adjacent (SE) from Retreat Lodge south of the SW portion of Hinsdale. How is the ice usually in the Birch Narrows, Smart's Bay area during the winter? Would this also be considered a "challenged" ice area?

PSU There is some current in Birch Narrows so yes it is challenged early in the year. I would contact Retreat Resort and see if they know the ice conditions. Usually good ice from Frasier Bay landing to your cabin unless lots of snow and pressure ridges come into play.

PSU also bad ice/open water between the islands that run from south of your place up to Grassy Point including muskrat and little muskrat. Each one of these areas between the islands is an area to be extra careful.

Ice thickness generally depends on how cold it gets and how much snow cover accumulates for insulation once the water ices over. So it all depends. Most people only think about temperatures, but snow cover may vary depending on where the clouds go.
