we had really strong winds in Rlf Mon. an I figured it broke up the pond real good. was it thick enough for the wind to just move the ice sheet out an then in again or did it break up into big chunks like it did a couple years ago to where you could hardly snowcat around? Boar

I just returned home from the lake(Birch Beach area) and it was froze over for as far as I could see with the exception of one small spot(maybe 40 yards long or so) that was open a few hundred yards from shore. I too thought the ice would be a mess but it actually looked pretty good--better than last year by far, at least around my place anyways! It is piled up by shore a little bit but not bad at all. Now, I hope it stays that way. It's looking good up here--bring on the cold weather!!

No doubt the wind really blew up here as well early in the week, but the wind was mostly from the south which doesn't affect the lake nearly as bad as a strong N.W. wind would so things stayed intact pretty well for the most part. Another thing that helped out was the Rainy river had a pretty good skin on it. When the River is open a strong south wind will tend to blow the water out of the river into the lake which can mess things up. I think with the ice on the river this was less of a factor as well.

Boar; Sounds like you are getting itchy for some ice fishing. Check out the Arnesen's Web/Cam. It looks covered with ice and snow as far as one can see, its been that way for many days. It won't be long now.

I talked to Sportsman's and they said this weekend or early next week. What does everybody think. Would a 8 x 16 wheel house be safe on 12" of ice with a 4-wheeler???? If I remember right I was on 13 or 14" with it and a 2500 truck. That was a little iffy.... I plan on coming up Tuesday. Would a 650 CAT pull the wheel house through Pine Island?

West side of Pine, Graceton, and the Morris area has some major nasty looking ice. Wind blew hard Tuesday from the NW, looks like a bowl of corn flakes out there and will make for some slow travel.
