hi,

I already posted this on the boats motors forum, hoping someone local has some insight. I am buying a 2004 2025 with a 225 horse Evinrude HO. I had the compression tested and the hours determined on the motor. The compression came back at 110 psi on all cylinders. Does anyone know if this is good or where I can find out if it is? the housr were very low, but there was an engine fault where the overheat switch closed and teh engine temp went above expected range. I was told the water pump was clogged and the motor was turned off immediately. this fault only happened once. any thoughts? I am super nervous about buying a used boat. thanks a ton for any help

Dave

Before you buy make sure you get that motor checked out by a evinrude dealer. RJ's is the only one I know of. I would get it checked and if its tests out ok put a down payment on the boat to hold it until spring when you can water test it and check everything is in working order. Get it all in writing too!!!

I think your fine and all cylinders being the same is probably more important. You must of had it checked out to read the fualt and check compression.

Thing I don't like is it overheated.

Hawgeye,

After I burned down my 2003 225 ho for the 3rd time I ended up spending close 15,000$ for a new E-Tec. The 225 Rude is the fastest motor in it's class when it's WORKING...It's close to 8,000$ to repair it. I would think long and hard about buying that motor. If you are going to buy it make sure you talk to Dave Lindeman in Soup town, he knows all when it comes to those motors. Call me if you need his #.

Drew

thanks for the info. I brought it to an authorized Evinrude dealer and he is the same mechanic that unclogged the water pump when it overheated. The thing I like about the motor is that there is only 37 hours on it, what I don't like is that the overheating fault came on at 36 hours. I like the idea of partial payment now and full payment in the spring, I am going to see if he'll do that. Drew I am going to give you a holler.
thanks again

Drew Im glad you posted on this one. I thought of you as I was reading this post. Most guys dont run their rig nearly as hard as you do though.

Just wanted to say a big thanks to Drew and this site. I was heading to the bank today to get the loan. After I posted yesterday, I received a few calls from friends on some of there concerns with that motor. I called a few mechanics and all of them told me that the 225 ho has a bad reputation. I canceled the purchase. thanks

I can also second Drews opinion. I had the same 03 Evinrude HO. My power head went twice, and and also lost the main PCM once. along with all the other little problems. Hope this helps.
