Thanks for the update Silverhair.... I guess we should be hoping for calm winds with the cold weather that is in the near future.

I am actually on the N. side but right now the sun is shining off the beautiful blue water rippling straight out in the middle between the Cushing landing and Ogema. Last night I drove past the East Landing and someone had a house out there a ways. I suspect we have pretty good ice on the West end and will be heading over there in a bit. This lake is not fast to freeze up and I think extreme caution is in order if you are one of the erly ones to venture out. Esspecially in this area of deep water and unpredictable ice near Haystack. This N. shoreline froze over again the past couple days.

Thanks again for the update. Nice to know we have a fellow poster that has a good day-by-day track of the lake area... I always use great caution on the ice, but i know there are always a few guys that see a house on the lake and figure they can roam where ever they please. I owe you a brew at the Castaway sometime!

I spent last night on Alex. The lake capped this A.M., but previous to that there was a fair amount of open water. If anyone goes out be very careful and ask someone they see where the open water was. There were several long fingers that snaked in over the deep water and edges out from the South side. Right now there are places you could go from 9" of ice to 1" in ONE step. If you are going far from shore check the ice each step not every once in a while. Don't even think about trying to get to the Haystack area for awhile.

Thanks EJ. lets just hope the snow stays away for a while so we can get the thinner ice to thicken. How was the fishing?

A couple small eyes and a few pike. Not much to eat, but enough action to keep it fun in the wind and cold. Had to stay shallower than normal due to ice conditions.

So my buddy and I are debating which lake to put our Wheel house on this year...

We've been doing Mille Lacs for a long time... But that lake is upside down with it's forage problems, and we've decided to try elsewhere.

I fish Alex a lot in the summer and early ice... But never in Jan & Feb...

How is it Bite wise and Security wise?

My other concern is if I leave her sit for a week, and she gets snowed in thick... How hard is it to find someone who can plow you free?
(I have an F-150... But no Plow)

I would never leave my wheel house on the lake. It's not that hard to take it on and off. Also it is better to keep moving spots, since most fish don't sit in one spot all year.

I've never had a problem before... But it was always on ML...

It's a 1973 Nomad Camper, that I keep nothing of value in...

What we've always done is put it on a lake... And then as the season progresses move it around from location to location...

If we really want to just move around over the course of a day, we use it as "Home Base" and take a portable around with us.

Towing it back and forth each weekend is a pain in the butt.

I have put my wheel house on Alex for years. I have never had a problem with breakins. ... i guess if i know that I wont be back to the cabin for a few weeks I pull it off, but i do that so I dont have an issue if it gets warm and the blocks start to sink ... nothing worse then freezing in the house.. mad

I have a plow on a wheeler that I use if we get nailed with snow. Usually, if i know we are going to get nailed, I try to get it off so i dont get snowed in too bad. If you decide to put your house on the West side, you should have no problem, as there are typically a ton of houses out there and usually a nice plowed road.

Dances- Yeah I was thinking you had an ice castle or something. If I had an older style wheel house like yours I would leave it out there too. The older ones are probably a little more work than the newer style wheel houses anyway. I like the idea of using the permanent as a home base and then searching the lake with portables. Good luck to you out there this year.

I have a question for you guys. How many houses are typically on Alex in the winter? Does it get packed out there? Do you guys mainly target walleyes or crappies, or both? Thanks.

See my buddy has a wheeler with a plow... But last year on Mille Lacs we got drifted in so bad and the drifts were so hard that the ATV would have just bounced off...

Now maybe that's a "Six miles out on Mille Lacs" type of thing.

Now I know the west bay usually ridges off from the rest of the lake... Do the people at Lakeview bridge it... Or do you have to go through from the Castaway access, or south access to get to that part of the lake?

Thanks for the info guys...

Currently I'm 75% For Alex... And my buddy is 60% for Alex...

I'm hoping to win him over the last little bit with a walleye outting up there.

The west side of the lake (the bay) is easily reached from the West Access, down the street from the Lakeview Store.

But if you want to get beyond the Bay... To still fish the west end of the lake, but not Thoroughfar bay itself... When/If that Bay Ridges up... Do they bridge it... Or do you have to get there from another access?
