I hate when you get inconsiderate fols who insist on coming out, sitting close to you at prime time then start cutting holes all over the place. Please if your not able to get on the ice until the witching hour stay away from others. Its the nice thing to do. I dont care if you drill holes from 9am - 3:30 pm but before or after those times give others some room.
Cheffrey it was a bit of the same today but we got some nice ones.

Went out on Vermilion today, out of Mckinley bay, we got 5, 4 keepers. Fish were biting very, very soft.

I was out on Johnson Lake (north of Babbitt, west of One Pine) today. One of my labs, Oscar, and I walked to the narrows to fish. There was 6 inches of clear ice there. I was unsuccessful in pulling any fish through the hole. Oscar was happy to get out and I was happy to have him pull the sled grin

Grand lake, 6" ice be careful of the pressure ridge. Just a few guys out there, everyone must be on Fish lake.

Slow action with few crappies and an occasional eye. 1/8th oz Go Devils tipped with a crappie minnow. During day light hours the small Northerns will keep you busy.

Occasional eye? You mean the one eye that was caught, by you? Hey, regardless of the slow bite, I had a blast with you Frank. What really made the trip for me was watching the snot rockets chase your jig on the Aqua View. That machine is awesome. We will have to do it again soon. Maybe this coming week when I get off of work we can sneak out for a couple hours. BC

Duscher, you manage to pull another fat walleye out of the hole after I left? I'd have to say it was def worth getting up at 5:45am even though Fishermans Corner didn't open till 7...... Thinking about picking up you and Fretch tom toms from GM, seeing as you took not one but two wrong turns this morning. Costing us at least 30 minutes of good fishing. All in all a pretty successful first trip of the year

Got a couple of hrs of fishing in on Fri. Was on Pike lake out of Grand Marais. Lost one on a tip, up but got the next one, a nice 17 in eater (walleye).

Ice was a good 8" from shore out about 30 yrds. Then down to 5 or 6" and about 3" in the middle.

Capt Blaine, have you made it out to Armstrong yet?
I was out on thanksgiving to fish it, but being alone I didn't like the ice on the channel from the public landing to the main lake. First two tries saw 3" then 2" within 20 feet on that moving water, so I skedaddled down to Big V. For a few hours. Mckinley had better than 4" and a several small perch swarmed me in 8'- not deep enough. All my equipment worked & that's a positive for first ice.
Would have liked to hit the N. Shore of Armstrong but not worth the risk.
Thanks to V. Food & Fuel for 100 free Waxies even though 1/2 of them were dead.

Went out to Shagawa Lake yesterday by the sea plane base about 5 in of ice and no fish but it felt great to get out again. Also has anyone been on Robinson Lake yet?

Had a fairly good bite on a lake west of Duluth this sunday. About 5-6in of ood clear ice. Fish were only actively feeding during the low light periods. Got alot of crappies with some eaters and one 22in walleye. A good first trip!
You can navigate next time gardner if you want, those lake book maps kinda suck! If you want to get me a tom tom though go ahead!

aj, welcome to HSO/FM. Great to have you here!

Robinson had five inches of ice a week and a half ago, so there's no doubt it's thicker now.

Hey I'm a college student at UMD in Duluth and I'm new to the area and I'm lookin' for any tips or pointers I can get. I just brought up my portable and i'm lookin for places to go this coming weekend. I was thinkin' about Fish Lake or maybe Pike Lake but i'm not sure. Lookin' to catch pike, eyes, or crappies. Any advise helps. Thanks
