Last year was my first venture down to P4, wiss I hadn't waited so long! Looking for another rod for vert jigging, pitchin, etc. The catch is I'm on a low budget, just like the song. So I'm looking for recommendations on rods in the $50-75 range. Thanks much, later.

Funny, I was looking at those last night. I'll have to head to Gander and fondle one.

For the money-about $80 to 90-- the Shimano Compre is a sweet stick. They make varying sizes and tip flex.

I like the 6'6"MLF and 7'MXF

Plus, they are an over-the-counter replacement if your partner steps on it.

See you at the Dam

Limit Creek smoothie 6"9" would be my first choice in that range. Very versatile rod and great sensitivity. It was designed and is manufactured by Turk and it's fair to say he knows something about river fishing. I use mine all the time. ANd it has a great warranty. Shimano Compre is second. The St Croix Triumph is a distant 3rd. FYI I have fished all three rods. Gave away the Triumphs. Still have the Compre as an extra rod for klutzy friends - people like Joel Nelson.

LIMIT CREEK
There are a few shops that carry them near the twin cities. Blue Ribbon Bait in Stillwater comes to mind. Otherwise, I know Evert's has them.
For jigging I like the Smoothie. For dragging jigs the 8'3" Slider is absolutly awesome. In fact, I am getting another one so I can have two of them dragging (one for each hand). I also really like this rod for lindy rigging and light 3-way rigs. A little more than you wanted to spend but a great rod none the less.
Plus, the over the counter warrranty is another great feature.

You should get a pink Barbie pole for him to use - rig it up with a little round bobber and a pink ringworm!

Dean will ship rods if you can't get to Everts to buy the Limit Creek.

Thanks Mark for the input. I like the Compre, but I am alwys on the hunt for another rod.

The Limit Creek Smoothie sounds like a good choice for the money and I like the small business appeal.

For the money--in your opinion--is the Avid 6'9"MLXF that much a better rod? It's nearly double in price and that's a lot of ringies, super-do's, and paddletails.

Appreciate yours or anybody else's 2 cents on that comparison.

Not really. You need to step up to the St Croix Elite or Extreme to really amp the performance over the Smoothie (and that's a lot more $$$). Let's put it this way - my last two trips I caught the majority of my fish on the Limit Creek. I was jigging the St Croix with my right hand the Smoothie on my left. Same jig weights and colors. I am right handed so the Smoothie was a at a bit of a disadvantage. Still caught most of my fish on it. For cold weather river fishing it is the best rod going for under $200 and it costs a lot less than that. Also is a dynamite slip bobber and rigging rod for summer fishing. Have used it a lot on Mille Lacs and Minnetonka.

Opps, Blue Ribbon Bait in Oakdale and Jimmy's Bait in Stillwater are distributors. The website lists all of them.
