I was on horseshoe today again. The spot off 22 had between four and a half and five and a half inches of good clear ice. I found ice as thick as seven inches in some of the bays and as thin as three in other areas.

Is there anyplace that is not fishable? I am planning on going out this wekend sometime. Will I have safe ice most everywhere on the lake?

Fish on - There is stil open water and weak spots in certain areas especially the river sections. I would personally stay where the crowds are unless you are familiar with the chain.

Get a spud bar and check for yourself, do not trust somebody elses opinions on what is safe, trust yourself instead andb fish with a partner during early ice.

Where would I find a spud bar? And any idea on how much they cost? What are they exactly? Seems like some sort of a chisel to me, but I can't out my finger around why you would want to chisel the ice you are about to walk on?

just a chisel. Use it to check ice thickness in front of you. If it goes through on one good hit don't walk there. All mine are home made, but most stores carry them.

Had good luck out there on monday it was a fairly consistant bite all day long and got hot right at sun down for about a hour. Tuesday was rather slow out there . Got a few walleyes and crappies but realy had to work hard for them. Any one else see the guys out in front of where the river comes in? From where I was it looked like they had a bunch of video equipment set up.

Most sporting goods stores should carry them. I just picked mine up at Scheels for under $20

I always check the ice with the spud about every 10 ft as I walk, like was said above give the ice a good hit and if it goes thru or close stay away from that area.

Safety first.

possibly in-fisherman ice fishing show or vexilar. I know the in-fisherman one has one coming up on channels thru the ice. Speaking of that does anyone know how they are biting????

Went today for a while in about 45' and got 2, a couple more bites, but all in all, it was pretty slow. I havent fished for them much, maybe they bite better in the evening or at night? maybe I was in the wrong depth? I'm not too sure.

The channels are a little shallower right now and they are biteing. Try breaks at about 15-22ft.
