but if you plan on fishing red you can only take 3 eyes from low.to make your 6 possion limit. You could have 4 walleye from LOW and still fish Red but then you could only keep 2 from Red. You can't have more than 6 walleyes total in possesion and no more than 3 can be from Red. Throw in a couple of saugers from LOW and you now have 8. You could have 3 eyes from Red, 2 eyes from LOW and 3 saugers from LOW. There are many combinations you could come up with but if you follow the rules for each lake and pay attention to the state walleye limit of 6 you will be OK.

Thanks Jonny and Bemidji Fisheries for clarifying. If in doubt don't keep, just like our self imposed size on Red is 16 1/2 inches anything over that goes back, why take chances. Can buy a whole lot of lobster for the price of the fine.

Chaff, I'm confused by your numbers. I thought you would be able to have 4 LOW walleyes, 4 LOW sauger and 2 Red Walleyes. If this is wrong can someone let me know.
Thanks, Kid

The state limit for walleye sauger combination is 6 except on LOW. Where you can keep a combination of 8 but no more than 4 can be walleye. So with what you are saying I believe you would be 2 fish over the limit because you have 10 in possesion.

The statewide limit is 6 fish -- walleye, sauger, or combined. The exception is you can have 8 from LOW with no more that 4 eyes. If you have 4 LOW eyes and 4 LOW sauger you are done. You can take no URL eyes at that point.

The possession limit also applies to what you have in the freezer at home. if you have maxed the possession limit and want to go fishing, you need to have a fish fry.

Good point BT. That seems to get overlooked a lot. Luckily the wife likes to fish and has a license so we can keep a nice stash of fish in the freezer for when the family is up for the monthly fish fry.

Pikester: Something to be said for the old Catholic tradition of lots of kids (family license) and eat fish on Fridays. LOL

thanks for clearing it up. I do think they could be alittle clearer on this one. Glad I found out before the second weekend in Jan.

not to change the subject entirely, but I wonder this with pheasants all the time. Say I'm in NoDak and have my limit, then I want to hunt Minnesota on the way back to the Cities - can I do that? Legally I should be able to, but I don't know if you'd be allowed to have that many pheasants
