Anyone have an idea how thick the ice is on the smaller lakes by Crane? We plan on heading up the 12th to do some fishing. Also how much snow is on the ground?

Smaller lakes on the iron range have 4-6" of ice as of last weekend. Not much snow there - can still see grass. I assume more ice and snow up near VNP.

Good deal. I am hoping they have about 8 inches by next weekend just to be safe. I was thinking of trying to get out on Johnson with the wheeler so hopefully that will be safe enough.

Not sure if you've heard a more recent report yet but as of yesterday and this past weekend, there's about 10-12 inches on the smaller lakes around the Iron Range. A little more snow than last time but not much. If you're still planning a trip into Johnson this weekend, I'd suspect you'd be fine with a 4-wheeler. I'd be hestitant trying to get into Little Johnson via the river but that's just my gut. Good luck.

Are the roads plowed enough to take a wheeler or should we take a sled?

Depends on your wheeler - some of the new ones can go anywhere! If I were going in there, I'd plan to take a snowmobile. I won't be up there for until the 20th for a week. You may want to give Anderson's a call to see what they know about the road into Johnson from the Crane Lake side.

Double check the forecast - calling for 6-12" through weekend into Monday with Sunday being the worst (or best in my opinion) for snow.
