Most of the lake is open. the little west bay is frozen but wouldn't walk out there.

yep, Christmas is always one of the last ones. It's so deep.

I just talked to a friend who lives on the lake and he said the lake is still pretty much wide open except the bays are froze over but there is very little ice even in the bays.

This snow we had last night will effect most of the other lakes but it won't bother Christmas too much. Last year Christmas was excellent ice making wise way ahead of Tonka because of all the early snow. Anybody remember the snow sausage out there? Somebody wasn't catching too many fishi to have all that time. grin

Years ago an old timer told me that that's why the lake is named Christmas Lake because you never fish it before Christmas. That may be a little extreme but it was a point well taken. It is true that it's very deep and all spring fed and usually one of the very last lakes I venture onto. It's right by my house and I've seen some wild ice thickness variations over the years. Some years the ducks and geese will keep a hole open too. Your best bet is the shallow bay on the west end. Start at the access and skirt your way along the shorline for about a block chipping as you go.
