WOW, thats a good question?? I would think your OK. You might need a Resort at LOTW mark and sign a slip that you were there and got your 4 fish. I dont think you can bring them on Red. You might have to leave them at a resort on shore.

over 26” through February 24, 2008. Beginning May 10, 2008 the possession
limit is three fish, all from 17-26” must be immediately released,
with only one over 26”. A person’s statewide bag limit may not include
more than the current daily bag limit of Red Lake walleye.
new If cumulative
harvest exceeds the safe harvest level on Sept 30, 2008 the possession
limit will revert back to two fish on Dec 1, 2008. If not, the possession
limit will remain at three for the 2008-2009 winter season.
While
a person is on these waterbodies, fish carcasses from fish with size
limits must be retained with head, spinal column, and tail intact and
maintained in such a way that the carcass may be readily unpacked,
unwrapped, and separated so that they may be examined, measured,
and counted. Carcasses count towards a person’s possession. If maximum
harvest caps are reached, these areas will be closed to the taking of
walleye. At that time it will be unlawful to have any walleye in possession
regardless of where taken while on or fishing in these waters. Please
check access signs and DNR Web site for any changes.

Possessing
Fish
• Daily and possession limits are the same unless otherwise noted. Fish
are in an angler’s possession whether on hand, in cold storage, in
transport, or elsewhere.
• Once a daily or possession limit of fish has been reached, no culling or
live-well sorting is allowed.
• While on or fishing waters with size restrictions, all fish for which
new
the size restriction applies must have their heads, tails, fins, and skin
intact and be measurable. A person may prepare and use the fish for
a meal while docked or moored to shore, or while on the ice. Fish
prepared and used for a meal still count towards the daily possession
limit.

• While on or fishing waters with size restrictions it is illegal to possess
any fish outside legal length limits.
• A person who is in transit and taking the most direct route back to
their lodging or docking, and not fishing, may possess fish outside of
or in excess of the limits for that water body, if legally taken from a
connected water.

As for walleye from other waters DO NOT BRING THEM ON THE ICE. It will be the same as last year where you need to leave your walleye from other waters on shore. Most of the resort and road operators have set-up a system for storing your fish while you are on Upper Red Lake.

Another note is Upper Red Lake is experimental / special regulations water that is subject to change at any time. Check with your resort, road operation or outfitter on the latest regs waters. Changes will also be posted on the MN DNR website and the fishery department normally will print out flyers for all the road accesses to hand out.

Per the special regulations in the DNR rule book for Upper Red Lake, so no you can't have fish from both lakes totaling 6.

I would disagree. That statement in the regs can be read both ways. Stan C.

I think include is the key word here. So let's say that you have 3 from each lake. Does you bag include more than the current daily bag limit of Red Lake Walleye?

Let me make this real simple-

How are anglers going to prove that three of the walleye are from Lake of the Woods and the other three are from Red while on Upper Red Lake? Could easily be an angler just harvested six walleye from Red and is simply stating he/she brought three on the ice with them. Maybe said angler found a ziploc and bag and wrote LOW on it.

I don't want be in that posistion and I don't want my clients in that posistion so if you didn't catch them on Upper Red Lake leave them on shore as most outfits are more then willing to work with you on this. Just play it safe.

Why push a gray area into a fine?

Thanks everyone, i agree with Jonny, safe bet is to leave the fish caught on either lake on shore, however i bet you will still need to prove someway they were caught on the lake you brought them from? CO could ask for proof you didn't go back to shore and deposit fish from same lake, then go back out. Assume this means that if you fish Red for two days you could have 6 walleyes on shore after second day? MAYBE??? Again proof is probably on you??

Jonny- Is it a myth that the DNR can identify whether a walleye is from Red Lake based upon the meat/body of the fish? I know this sounds ridiculous, but I have had numerous people tell me this. I'm sure they have all heard the same rumor as well. Whenever someone tells me this, I just give them the "really?" response. Sounds like a good rumor to spread to deter people from keeping or possessing over their limt to me.

If you have low walleyes you should have some type of proff you were up there a receipt from the area. Its simple no more then three upper red lake walleye in possion period.

This also means if you catch your three in the morning you can not keep any that night, 3 per day!

groove..of course that is called double tripping and illegal as heck. As far as prooving it. The CO or someone else who could testify, would have to catch you in the act. (I believe this is the good old USA and you are innocent until proven guilty...last I checked)

Jonny is right as rain. If you are on URL you had better not have more than the possesion limit for that lake (3). If you are driving home on the road you can have fish from both lakes but not more than the statewide limit, total of 6. (and that includes what is in your freezer at home.) Thats my understanding of it all.

I cant wait to get up there again, its been a few years.
