The St Croix walleye bite at Bayport can be a funny thing. A few years ago it was an evening bite for about 30 to 45 minutes and then it would just turn off like somebody threw a light switch. We had a run of warm December weather and it was funny because we would be standing outside around our holes and you could hear the geese coming back in from the fields heading towards the highline open water and when those geese would fly over the bite would start. About the time the geese settled down for the night the bite would stop. Those geese were like a clock that you could plan the bite around. When you heard the geese you starting jigging like crazy because the bite was about to start.

Great info all and thanks much for the warm introductions!

SteveD - If I'm reading you right, then look for the clam this year with several captured geese tethered to it reigning in a consistent eye bite wink

Love the graphic Sean.

Rui you and I can head out there and learn it together. I'm eager to get out on the Croix for some ice action.

Rui, ice fishing is easy. The biggest decision is usually #5, or where to insert step B (crack open beer!) It helps to have a good idea on where to do #1, but with a enough times of getting to #5 or step B's, you can usually get lucky or tired enough to stop thinking about catching fish until the next day.

Step 1: drill a hole in ice
Step 2: put your flasher down and turn on.
Step 3: bait hook
Step 4: drop line down hole to desired depth
Step 5: be patient and wait, catch a fish or try a new spot and repeat steps 1-5.

If we were out today, we could skip step 1. grin

That would leave you with a tough decision. What kind to go with for step B? smile

Dec. 8th is my guess when you'll see anglers on the ice.

Caught my fist hard water walleye on 4 Dec last year. I'm betting 7 Dec this year. It's either try to catch fish or watch the Vikes (or Pack if you'd rather) get smoked again. I'd rather catch fish.

RiverChuckNorris, Stay on the MN side if your looking for eye/saugers. Never seen anyone take a limit out but you can pick up a few at prime time evening. Move a lot during the day and stay around 18'. You don't have to fish the community spots but it's a good starting place.

Good Luck,

Ferny.
