I know I'm late but I havent put numbers on my porti for like 3-4 years. only been checked once on the ice and the warden said nothin bout me not havin no #'s on the side, maybe she was just busy and needed to move on to better things.

Black Sharpie will work on most portables, Silver Sharpie on the black ones.

I'll look for the attachable holder next time I am at the stores. I am big on buying and selling used items, so I would not want to sharpie on the canvas directly.

Where can I find out what my DNR # is?

White bar of soap the little bars that are at motels works real good on black houses i have a house that i did it to over 30 years ago and only touched it up a few times this is what they told me to use back then .

you dont NEED your license or dnr number if you never leave your ice house. ( i think that is considered 50 yrds) over night. but if your leaving your ice house over night im sure somone will be looking to have thier way with your equipment...

You DO need your DNR# or drivers licence# on your portable. I was with someone who got a ticket for not having any of the required ID info on his portable. He was sitting in it at the time.

These are the rules from the 2008 Minnesota State Statutes, Chapter 97, Section 355, Subdivisions 1 and 2. Keep in mind that the definition of "fish houses" has been changed to include all houses whether on skids, wheels, sled or other shelter used for angling.

97C.355 SHELTERS ON ICE; DARK HOUSES AND FISH HOUSES.
Subdivision 1.Identification required.

All shelters on the ice of state waters, including dark houses and fish houses, must have: (1) the owner's name and address, (2) the owner's driver's license number, or (3) the "MDNR#" license identification number issued to the owner legibly displayed on the exterior with characters at least two inches high.
Subd. 2.License required.

A person may not leave a dark house or fish house unattended on the ice at any time between midnight and one hour before sunrise unless the house is licensed and has a license tag attached to the exterior in a readily visible location, except as provided in this subdivision. The commissioner must issue a tag with a dark house or fish house license, marked with a number to correspond with the license and the year of issue. A dark house or fish house license is not required of a resident on boundary waters where the adjacent state does not charge a fee for the same activity.

I will have to make sure my portable is legal before i go out this year.

If you don't leave your portable unattended you do not need any numbers.
"Dark houses, fish houses, and portable shelters placed on the ice for shelter while fishing do not need a license unless the house will be left unattended overnight." page 55 of the 2008 fishing regulation guide.

Yep, you guys are confusing two issues.

You do not need a license for a portable shelter unless on the ice overnight and unattended, BUT all shelters must be ID'd according to the DNR's regs.
