I have been coyote hunting before but never had any luck. On monday I was deer hunting and sitting in my stand. Heres the scenario. River in front of me 100 yrds. big thicket 60 yrds to the left and a plowed field out to the thicket. I was in a little peice of woods with a hill to my right with a tree farm on top of the hill. I could here crunching on the hill but to my right and behind me. soon enough the sound went infront of me but still to my right where I couldnt turn and shoot. then the coyote began to trot towards me. Im a bow hunter and that gets me excited but my heart started jumping out of my chest. every step she took got me more excited. then she got within 5yrds. and she smelled me. she bolted and it was on. she was jumping over downed trees and weaving around bushes. I put a round high on her left side obviously passed through and in the process caught the lung. she ran 5 yrds fell down. got back up ran ten yrds and then fell down and died. I am hooked it was a great experience. I have a couple questons though.

1) the female weighed roughly 40lbs. What is a large coyote weigh?

2) what equipment am I in need for now. lets just say I have nothing.

1.) Nice coyote, you can consider that a large coyote

2.) gun (shotgun, rifle), call, ammo, time, and patience

Nice job, I would consider that a big coyote as well.

I always seem to come up short in the Time dept. myself

Congrats! Wait until you actually call one (or more) in...then you will really have an addiction going, along with a great sport to enjoy all winter. I started coyote/fox hunting last year and can't wait to get going now that the ducks vanished and deer season will be over soon.

another question for ya guys. how many phesants do you think an adult coyote could eat. Our phesant population has gone down a lot but we saw 10 turkeys (6 toms, cant wait til spring) which our area has never had turkeys in it. Are the coyotes eating phesants or could the turkeys run of the phesants?

I actually read a study that shows coyotes help pheasants more than hurts pheasants. A coyote will eat skunks, raccoons, and all the other "egg" eaters.

I am not saying coyotes don't eat pheasants because they do.

A coyotes diet is going to consist more of rabbits, and mice, depending on the time of the year.

To help pheasant populations, you should focus more on your fox, skunks, and raccoons.
