Thank you Bill for the help you gave my Father and I on Thursday. You reassured we would get out from Highbanks and yes they did a wonderful job keeping the roads good and plowing right out to where the fish are. And thank you for The bait. Those had to have been the healthiest minnows I've used this year. We were able to get 8 keeper perch, a nice northern, and 2 eye's. One eater and 24" that of course went back. Even though it was -20 below it was a beautiful day on the lake. We will be back.

They sure do point you in the right direction. Every time I'm off the the LOW or Winnie I always stop at Fred's to get my minnows.

Where is freds bait? We will be driving up Thursday morning and need to pick-up some bait. We will be heading up 371 to Cass Lake and then East to Nodaks.

Jason: Are you telling me that Freds is near Deer River? If Freds is 10 miles east of Nodaks and I am coming from the west, it would mean an extra 20 mile drive.

Mike, Freds bait is 20 miles east of Nodaks so you would add 40 miles total to your trip

Popatop: Thanks for the information. Is LeRoys in Cass Lake the best option if we are coming up 371 to hwy 2 and then east to Nodaks? I will be spending the night in Brainerd Wednesday so maybe we will pick-up bait there. Any other bait shops along the way to Winni that others like?

Minnetonka,

You can buy bait at Nodak's. I'm not sure what the price is for a scoop and what the difference the cost would be between them or a bait shop. We use to buy our bait on the way up but now just get it from Nodak's.

Up there in eleven days!

You can never go wrong stopping at Fred's!! They always give you more than enough minnows and great advice on where the fish are biting! Great place to get bait - Thanks to Bill & Mary!

If You are staying in Brainerd stop at S&W, it's right on 371, just past the racetrack on your right hand side. They have great bait and scoops are as generous as you'll find.
I'll be heading up to Winnie tomorrow a.m., I guess I'll give it a go out of highbanks. Weather is looking pretty good after the last cold snap. I'll post when I get back.

Isn't there a bait shop at the intersection of 371 and 2, on the north side? I stayed at the casino in Cass Lake for the Winni event and picked up some spare minnows at a bait shop the morning of the event while enroute from Cass lake to Winni. . There was a gas station on the SW corner. On my way up comeing from the other direction I stopped at Freds's bait. Good guy, talked a little with him and he recognized my girlfriend from a picture that was posted on this site. She thought she was a movie star or something!

Minnetonka,
I've been stopping at Swensons in Hackensack in the summer when I go up 371 to Cass. I like them better than Leroys, that is at 371 and 2.

RTH, Fred's is on the corner of HWY 2 west, on the edge of DEER RIVER. YELLOW building. If you go past hwy 46 north you've gone to far.
