Hey everyone, The wife and I are heading to Breezy Point over MEA weekend for the first time, and she says bring the boat with. A Lake map looks a little scary of this lake so I'm looking for tips/pointers/cautions. I've never been on this lake before and was hoping for some tips on where I might find some walleyes/crappies/northerns. Not looking for honeyholes, but some basic places to put her on fish. The more she catches, the longer I stay on the water. Thanks in Advance!

try looking for marks in 27 to 45 fow. Usually if I find fish in the fall (daytime) thats where there easiest. I usually just hover over them with large chubs (4-7") tail hooked w/ large hooks/slip sinkers. Normally its WHAM and set the hook in about an 8-count, fish on.

In the evenings/nights trolling w/ cranks in the shallows can be hot. The cool part about the fall is they cooperate better in the daylight so you can see better w/ less tangles and hazards to deal with.

Start looking at maps and concentrate on humps, steep drops, and deep coontail/cabbage beds.

Good Luck. I'll be chasing feathers and fur myself...

I will be up there for the first time this weekend for a wedding, but I will be bringing the boat. Just curious if anyone knows off hand if the lakemaster chip has a detailed map or just a basic contour map of the lake. Also wondering if anyone has luck with the walleyes using fatheads or artificial bait? Are there any shallow spots or rocks that are potential hazards I should be aware of? Thanks in advance for any info.

During the day redtails on live bait rigs or on jigs would be my thought. Redtails are in good abundance up here now, and the fish are hitting them. I would think that by next week the water temps would be dropping off pretty good, maybe even turnover happening. The walleyes should start their transition to fall shallow patterns, concentrate on shoreline breaks, or if you can find a good 15 foot weed edge, there will be fish holding there. Later afternoon/evening pulling cranks will work, eyes have been hitting cranks a while now for me this fall. Good luck, let the big ones swim free.

I have the lakemaster II and fish Pelican alot, the chip is super detailed and I would consider it vital for this lake especially. The tatics these other guys talked about are spot on.

I fish the north end mainly. Had some good action on weavers pt. with redtails and bobbers. Theres a ton of places around gooseberry island. Rifle sight bar is a popular place. most shallow areas are marked with buoys. Night fishin can be good if you are prepared for the weather. Trollin cranks is good if they dont hit the redtails. Theres also ssome underated bass fishin on pelican. Try spinnerbaits over the shallow weedflats, 8-10'. Its a blast.

What speed has been working for cranks? I've been going about 2.8 mph and have only been getting a few. Thanks

Charley,
The Jones Bay landing is totally new. There isn't a fishing boat made (for Minnesota) that won't launch there now.

I have always had best luck moving at a speed less than 2mph after dark. I use the trolling motor and move the bait with my rod and let the boat move to pick up the slack. Big baits on dark nights, smaller on clear calm full moon nights. Don't be afraid to go ultra shallow, 3-5ft. A little extra line out, and move the boat in a zig zag (s curve) fashiion.

Have Fun!!!

I just got back Sunday morning from a week of fishing on Pelican..... We were finding some eyes up towards the shallower water, but most fish came from 25' or deeper...... The largemouth bass were absolutely off the hook. I still can't believe those things are that fat! Good luck to ya! I hope the wind cooperates with you better than it did for me! Redtails were the bait of choice for the eys, and Leeches (if you can still find them) for the bass.

Thursday was good for variety for us. We caught a few nice walleyes (mostly on Raps), a few crappies on a minnow and bobber, and some bass on aything we threw out there. Friday was too calm and quiet, so everything was very spooked. Not good fishing Friday night.
