We plan to go to Kab on the second or third week of June next year. We will put in on the Ash River and intend to camp at a relatively close spot such as Lost Bay or West Namakan. Can we expect that some of these campsites be open on Sunday afternoon or will they likely be mostly filled up?

I would say that most sites will be occupied, but you will find some that are open. Try to time your arrival around noon to take advantage of sites that open up earlier in the day. I'd head toward Kabby and the Cutover Island area or the many sites along the the north shore.

Agreed, in fact I would consider trying to get to the landing around 10:30ish. This is when alot of folks are coming off the lake on a sunday heading home. Dont be afraid to ask those coming off where they were camped at either.

If I see a group heading out when I'm coming off, I will always let them know the site I just left. Sunday late mornings would probably be my first choice for starting a camping trip that time of year, or about any week other than a holiday weekend.

PS: My avatar is a sunset from Peterson point, a very nice campsite that time of year wink

Thanks guys. That information is kind of discouraging. I didn't realize that it would be that crowded. We will follow your advice.

A fully loaded Alumacraft with a 50 HP motor, two adult men, and all of their gear and supplies for a one week stay can put in at Ash River Center and be at the North end of Williams Island on Namakan in less than 25 minutes. I do this every year at about the time you are planning your trip . . . and you have a big selection of campsites to check out along the way. Williams Island is closer to the western end of the lake than mid point of the lake, so you still have alot of options available if you had to go farther East for a campsite.

In the late 80's and early 90's I would fish the West End of Kabetogama out of Rocky Point Resort (gone but not forgotten) always in the first or second week of June. The Walleyes were either spawning or just finished spawning in the shallows of Tom Cod Bay. Fishing was fantastic. There always seemed to be several campsites available on that end of the lake. Some were closed because Eagles were nesting. I do know that the bears were frisky on the mainland sites that time of the year. You'd occasionally see them raiding a campsite when the occupants were out fishing. You're a long ways from Namakan or the East end of Kab but you really didn't need to go that far to find fish. I always had a great time on Kab, but now Crane, Sand Point, and Namakan get most of my attention. That whole area up there is absolutely breathtaking. Good Fishing
