Anybody have a Golden Retriever for a pheasant dog? My wife and daughter are begging for a golden, and I want a field dog. Some people have told me t he golden is a great hunter, others have said they are to docile?

Any thoughts?

A Golden is a great dog in the field and with people. I have springers and I say go for it, you won't go wrong.

There are some really nice gordons out there. Just make sure you get a field gordon!

Find a field bred golden and you will have a great hunting dog. A few burs, but if they didn't have that they would be perfect.

I dont think a field bred golden is neccessary. Any golden with good hunting lines will do great. I have hunted with goldens who were not field bred, but came from great waterfowling lines, and they were excellent. That is what makes them great, they are versitile! But be sure to purchase your dog from a breeder that actually hunts their dogs avidly! It will be much easier to train them because much of it will be instinctual. Its not always the case when you get a dog who comes from a background of dogs that were strictly house pets, or only hunted once in a while.
