I'm headed to the lake this weekend. Anybody doing any good with the geese?

Land or water?

Thx,

Mike

Please do me a favor and shoot as many geese as possible. If you have any problems hunting one, I might suggest a few road crossings here in the metro that are full of the dumb animals! smile

How is the migration looking of late? At times I usually see a strong push of ring necks through the wild rice lakes north of G.R., and some giant Canadas.

Did those birds already push through or are they still up that way?

Just curious if anyone had any recent reports.

Lisa and I took a long drive yesterday and went north of Deer River to the east side of Little Bowstring and went by lots of potholes and lakes and did not see any duck or geese. We did see 2 hens and a rooster, 3 grouse and a Gray Jay. The trip was mostly to sight in my rifle and take some pictures so I was not up at the crack of dawn. I have not heard any shots fired from the islands on Deer lake this weekend so I think that it may be a little early yet. I know that I have been ice fishing on Moose lake and they have been duck hunting on Deer.

A buddy of mine really hammered the ringers on Bowstring River, he wouldn't tell me exactly where. Said there was about 5-7000 of 'em.

Nice. Looks like some bird-moving weather coming later this week. And deer moving weather. Should make for a nice weekend.

I was up this weekend.
Had three ringers land in the dekes, I let them be.Dropped 1 mallard a short time latter. Saturday night I had a flock of mallards try to land on my head as I was picking up the dekes. Never saw a goose all day Sat.

Sunday was a bust.... saw a large flock of geese as I was picking up the dekes @ 08:00. We had to leave early as the wife wanted to watch the vikings.

Thanks Mike. Sounds like there might be a few birds around. If I could drop Mr. Big Saturday morning I could spend the rest of the weekend and into next week with scattergun in hand for ruffs or ducks...maybe some geese too.

Lots of birds on Friday and Saturday before things froze up on Monday/Tuesday. I'm guessing they'll be freed up one more time before the year is over.

Lots of geese but nothing that came into our half dozen dekes.

Found our little rice lake tough to hunt this year....2 consecutive low water years let the rice push out pretty far. Lots of ring necks and a few flocks of mallards. Friday we had the stands hung kind of late so we figured we'd stay off the lake that evening, Saturday we kinda set up wrong-seems like the birds wanted open water or didn't like the dekes.

Probably the most birds I had seen on the lake at once in a couple years. Sunday morning I came out to try it again but everything was gone with the snow and wind. Still was nice to be out...one river otter was a little surprised to see me!

It wasn't a lot of birds, but I will say this: Man am I glad I had my Arctic Armor with! Pretty darn cold out there.
