RED RIVER CONDITIONS?

WAS PLANNING TO FISH GREENBACKS OCT. 8-12, HOWEVER, HAVE HEARD THAT THE WATER IS HIGH, FAST, AND DIRTY, CAUSING POOR FISHING CONDITIONS. I WAS WAS THINKING ABOUT PUSHING THE TRIP BACK 2 WEEKS TO OCT 21 - 25. I UNDERSTAND THAT THE RIVER IS DRAWN DOWN AROUND THE 15TH, DOES THAT MEAN THE 15TH OR ANYTIME AFTER THAT? WOULD IT BE A POOR DECISION TO COME ON THE 21ST BECAUSE OF WHEN THE WATER IS LET OUT, OR SHOULD WE TRY TO FISH BEFORE THE 15TH EVEN IF THE WATER IS HIGH AND MUDDY? I HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE RED WHEN I'VE HEARD OF HIGH WATER BEFORE SO I DO NOT KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT! THANKS FOR ANY INFO!!!

Typically, after the drawdown the fishing is slowed for a couple days but I have had great luck anyhow by just moving towards the lake. I fish Sugar Island to Netley and have done great. The Miracle Mile is tough when the current is rippin. I can't speak to high water conditions much. Good Luck and in my opinion you should be fine the 21st-25th. I will be there the 17th - 25th.
Good Luck.

Hey I have been up to selkirk. I fished the previous weekend and the water was thick chocolate milk. I went back up this wednesday and the greeenback hunt got better every day. The water temp saturday morning in the mile was 56 degrees. the clarity was about 6-8 inches. The fish are there. We got a few nice ones. Jig bite definetly dominated. The crank bite was picking up everyday as the water cleared up. Hopefully this rain wont dump to much and the water will contiunue to clear up. Looks like cooler temps so the water will cool down, this gets the greenies moving up stream and helps the river to clear up faster. As far as the water being high, I am not sure who you are hearing that from. water levels are right where they always are. The water levels usually dotn vary to much unless there is a huge rain or flood. all it does is run out to the lake. Nothing holds it back. I know the netley area was banging on saturday. Meaning the greens should be up on the mile by the time you get there. Early on netley seems to be hit or miss. I would focus on the mile. If its cloudy Jig, clear Crank. If its real cloud try a 3 way rig with a floating jig. Most fish will be coming through suspended. Also if its cloudy try shallow. Most of our fish were shallow. Current is about normal now. Hope this helps. I have been there i think 12 or 13 years, this year was tough but it kept getting better each day. our group ended with a 11.5 9.5 and a couple in the 5-6 pound. Sauger bite increased each day which is always a good sign. wow that was a lot of stuff. good luck

forgot to mention. Our greenie bite was tough so during the day we looked for some frisky kitties to fill the void. It was awesome. we fished about 2-3 hours each day and landed 38 cats. Biggest was 29 pounds. Also got a 28-27 and about 10 in the 24-25 range. Definetly a sweet time filler. Cut sucker was the bait of choice. outfished everything else 2-1. including tulibee or gold eyes. Nooner
anyone know how to post pictures? I got a few greens and some sumo kitties. Than ks again stu for the lodging and info. You are the man. Cant wait for hard water. Ahhh ya never know you might see me again this fall.

Great news nooner. We typically hunt ducks in the morning and evening so our greenback fishing is middle of the day. We have had great sucess the last couple of years with at least 10 masters coming mid day. Hope that holds true again this year.
