I sent Yogi and Boo Boo a text and advised them to get out of dodge.

We only managed 1 bear out of 5. The baits were getting hit every other day and after dark. Fishing was also terrible on Bowstring. They better get a walleye size limit and do something about all of the northerns.

hunter76, 1 bear for 5 is better than 0 for 2. we are going to wait till the last couple weekends and try again. we did ok this spring on bowstring. you can take 9 slimers under a certian length there. great pickling size but we didnt get but 3, so they are trying to do something about all them slimers. are your hunters going back after bear or are they done?

hunter76, Bowstring lake was one of the best walleye producing lakes this summer.
I haven't been out there for a couple months now, but the way it was spitting them out from opener to mid summer, shows me the slot isn't needed.
just because you had poor luck or the fishing has slowed says little for the health of the fishery.

slots are not the answer for every poor outing.

A slot on all lakes would help. A minimum would be nice, also.

in your opinion. the next thing you all will want is catch and release only. then the anti's would only be a heartbeat away from abolishing fishing altogether, considering it harrasment of wildlife.

remember there is already a slot on ALL lakes. only 1 over 20 inches.

sorry for the hi-jack guys.
lets get back to the topic at hand...

All I am saying is that if everybody catches walleyes and is keeping the ones under 14 inches, what is going to be the future of that lake? I guess I shouldn't say everyone cause there is a lot of people that do throw small ones back. When you have slot limits on fish, it is in my opinion the best thing for a lake to help maintain good fishing for years to come.

Nearly every decent walleye lake in Itasca co now has that 17-26" slot. Bowstring and Sand do not, yet both of these lakes continue to produce as well as any other and there continues to be a diverse size structure. On some of the lakes with the slot, it's getting difficult to catch eaters.

The 17" bottom on the slot seems too low to me. Maybe a good idea to get a lake back on it's feet, but long range I'm worried that this upsets the balance of the lake. Unlike alot of folks, I have no interest in catching dozens of 20"+ walleyes just to brag that I did. If I want to play c+r, I'll fish for bass. Walleyes fight like a wet roll of toilet paper.

Leave Bowstring and Sand alone and we'll compare them to the others in a decade.

Wasn't this thread about bears at onetime?
