This is the 2nd time I fished Kab for walleyes so it was kind of a learning experience. Got some info on places to try that ended up not panning out so well, so I went out and put my skills to the test.

Saturday

Tried 2 foot leader and red bead, red hook & crawler(my go to lindy rig) didnt pick up too many fish. My kid used chartreuse bead with chartreuse hook and minnow to limited sucess. (I refuse to jig fish)

Tried a 3.5 foot leader with chartreuse spinner (northland with the fish face on it) and it was HAMMERTIME. Fish were hitting this so HARD, it was like cheating.

I was really getting into the fish on saturday after the rainstorm and I was on a wide open reef and it got impossibly rough to stay on that spot. 28 feet of water, fast troll, fast drift.

Then I fished near a tiny island on the west side (calm side of island) and picked up a few fish. Then we fished another calm side of on island on the west side and filled up the livewell for camp dinner later. It was fast and furious for about an hour.

30-31 feet seemed to be the magic depth EVERYWHERE on the west side.

Sunday

Fished the same tiny island but the fish were in a different spot. Again 31 feet. Threw a marker out where the pile of fish I graphed was and every single time I drifted or trolled past it, we'd get a hit or a fish. Finally it got too rough to troll or drift at the right speed so we left....with the livewell looking good once again.

Caught lots of fish too big and too small to keep this weekend. Didnt keep anything under 14". Missed a few fish that hit the back of the minnow...Not the consistant size of Rainy eyes, but really fat and good fighting walleyes. Exceeded expectations.

Sled, glad you had a good time on Kab. Fishing has been really good all year long. Just a week or two ago thier was a great article in the Duluth News tribune about Kab eyes and how the slot is starting to pay dividends. Lots of fish that are between 18-25 inches in the lake. I think I saw you fly by me on your way to Woodenfrog. I was headed to my mail box. Big Ski do sticker in the back window?? Any ways nice pics and glad you enjoyed the trip. The best fishing is still to come!!

Great report.

I'll also add my report here.

We were in Voyaguers Thurs - Sun.

Thursday evening: Namakan in Wolf Pack area...3 guys - 20 eyes...2 keepers (16 & 14) and the rest were smaller (mostly 6"-10")...using bottom bouncers with minnows & crawlers - chartreuse hooks.

Friday: Went over to Kab, fished middle portion of lake. Tried 30-35 foot with limited success. One keeper (16"), 1 22" and a few small eyes and perch. Move to shallower in afternoon (against all conventional wisdom...dead calm, high sun) and started hammering the eyes. Caught 9 between 14" & 16" and a bunch of 20+ eyes plus some nice smallies. All were caught between 15 & 24 feet of water.

Saturday: Same basic approach as Friday. It really picked up after the rain squall came through in the afternoon. Ended up with 10 keepers (14" - 16") and we lost count of the big ones. Biggest was 25" with quite a few in the 20-22 range. Caught the 25" eye in 14 FOW. Also, lots of big smallies.

Had a great time, nice fish fry Friday night and great camping weather. Did get our campfire rained out Sat night and were in bed by 9:30.
