Hey guys, I am very new to catfishing and was wondering if I made a trip in september some time if it would be worth my while, I am not dead set on catching a trophy but I would love to get into some numbers of decent fish. Any input would help on this, location, time, bait preferance, anything... thanks again guys, The Prodigy

Hi Prodigy. I have to admit, once Sep hits, my fishing time is pretty limited (I'm chasing critters with my bow at that time). But... there's some great fishing in Sep. Some of the other guys can chime in here, but Sep is a great month to find big, fat fish that are beefed up for Winter.

It depends on the year of course, but September can have some of the best fishing of the season. Fall is the best time of the year to catch a mixed bag of both trophy walleyes and cats.

If you really wish to catch sumo oversized giants, run up to the Canadian Red and fish with Stu or his crew.

They are the fattest sumo Channel Cats anywhere...period!

September is the time of giants up North. The bait for them is fresh Tullibies, nothing but Tullies's. Day or night...Tullies rule.

Tullies are high pro Sumo chow, and trust me....they love it.

If you are looking for a real Channel Catfish experience, head up to the Red River in Lockport, MB. I just returned from a 2.5 day trip with Ed Carlson and several colleagues and all I have to say is "The bite is on". Trophy fish are the norm at this time of the year, with fish up to 38 inches very common and occasional fish up to 40 inches. I personally caught over 50 fish over 34" during this trip (actually lost count), with over 200 fish over 34" being caught (these are all Manitoba Master Angler fish). This is the 7th year I have made this trip. Real "Sumo Kitties". Stu McCay runs Cats on the Red - www.catsonthered.net. He will set you up with everything you need.

Eh Nick, 7th year already...WOW. Always a pleasure to fish with you and the crew.

Nick has racked up some serious sumo tonage over the years. He loves to fish and he took to cats with a fury.

I have fished with Nick on both ends of the Red, and points in the middle too. Even in some mean and nasty cold wet fall weather fishing walleye, he is a trooper. A born again river rat!

Don't be shy about posting some of them sumo kitty pics either Nick. I know you have a few. wink

Keep in touch, be sure to pop in here on the Red River Forum from time to time too.

Keep that ice fishing opportunity in mind..see ya than Eh.

Here is Chicago Nick with a one of his many ><,sUMo,> kittys from last week.

Here is another from Mike F Nicks partner in sumo cat hunting, what a brute Eh.

And the born again hard, Leslie..AKA..Da "Catwoman", with one of here many kitty's she took to task on the trip.

That's just 3 from some 200 plus chubby kittys put in the net last week.

That's a heap of fun...Eh!!

grin

OK, I just can't resist sneaking just one in of me too. A purdy Cokn'n Kitty.
