Gander Mt. had some very good deals on long shore casting rods. I think it was 50% off all rods with a orange tag. I scored a $100 Rapala rod for $25 yesterday.
They were starting to stock all their spoons etc, for fall shore season. Cleos, crocks, daredevils all were getting pegged when I was there.

When casting off the wall and letting it sink, allow the spoon to sink on a completely slack line. One the lure hits bottom, take in slack and give it a big pull to get it off the bottom, and then slow your retrieve to slow/medium for the trip back to the wall. As mentioned, this targets lakers. If you want to check out if the salmon are in or are looking for Kamloops raingbows, just count your spoon down to the count of ten and reel in with a moderate/fast retrieve. Using this method I've never once lost a lure and had to cry Krocodile tears. grin

I always just used 6 or 8 lb Trilene XL because it was limp and cast well, and there were no issues with abrasion in that open water. I preferred 8 lb, because you have a real shot at a 15 lb laker or a good-sized salmon off the wall, and when one of those fellas takes off for Bayfield, the extra line weight is an advantage, and 8 lb cast really well for me with the long rods and wide-spool spinning reels. I went with a 4000 series Shimano spinning reel for my spoon-casting rod (rod was a Berkley 9 ft steelhead rod), because it held a ton of line and the wider spool made long casts easier.

And I was a 5/8 oz Kroc guy as well. Best combo of casting distance and action. I never bothered with any other spoons. I always preferred copper/orange or gold/orange, but I don't think color is that big a deal.

I also put on 1/0 Siwash hooks instead of the trebles. That was so if I wanted to cast along some of the North Shore rivers I could do it legally, since trebles aren't allowed there.

Hey Guys,

I was hoping someone could give me a pointer or two on any decent shore spots around Lutsen/Tofte or up through Grand Marais? I've pretty much only fished the river mouths in the fall for salmon etc or inland lakes for walleyes, but I'd like to try my luck in the deeper water for something "else". Any thoughts? I'm likely going to be up there about the last weekend of sept through the mid week into oct.

Thanks.

The last weekend of sept. lakers are still open and they should be comming in shallow to spawn,cranks/spoons at river mouths and off breakwalls might be worth a shot.

Thanks Redhooks. I'm glad you pointed out the season. I'd surely have checked it before fishing but it just gave me a reminder that I might schedule my visit activities a little differently.

Thanks again.
