Was up at red this past weekend and caught some decent northerns. I caught one that was a little unique. I hooked into one and it starting ripping out line. When I finally got it about half to the boat it surfaced and I could tell it was not hooked in the mouth. After a few more runs I got it in and it was a 42 inch northern hooked in the meaty part with one barb right before the tail. There is a lot more fight when you hook them in the tail as appose to the mouth!

The old slash set! I cought a 48" musky on Mantrap that way. I was thinking cover of Musky Hunter Magazine, guest apperances on fishing shows etc etc until I realized the battle of a lifetime was just a foul hooked fish. blush

They really fight that way, almost unstoppable.

You aren't lying, try this on a flyrod and a sockeye salmon (6-10lbs) in the kenai river....WOW!! Your actually trying to "snag" them in the mouth, since they rarely bite....but thousands are caught that way....but most fun you can have in waders!!

I would say the same for King's but no chance on a snag and a fly rod with those guys....got a couple coho's that way, but they are so aggresive that almost always get them in the mouth!!

I hooked a 63" 80lb sturgeon on the Rainy River this spring that way as well. Took close to an hour to bring it in. Like Jonny said, there is no stopping a big fish that's foul hooked. Actually, it's the one in my avatar.
