Never fished Minnewaska before, I like to jump around and try different lakes when I can. Checking to see what fishing is like during the winter. Not looking for the "HOT" spots just general information as I like hunt on my own when pointed in the right direction. Thanks in advance for any info.

Wow, we haven't even had a first frost yet. shocked Never fished this lake, I'm an Osakis guy but had to compliment your "enthusiasm" for ice when its still 82 outside. Hope somebody puts you in the direction of fish.

Sorry, just LOVE the ice and got excited when I seen international falls was down to 34 degrees one night last week. I know that the bow hunters do not like me right now, because a couple of guys that I work with are big bow hunters and chew me out when I talk about ice fishing before bow season. Hope some one lets me know how Minnewaska is during the winter.

By all means... Let's talk Minnewaska Ice Fishing...

My buddy's and I have decided to bail on Mille Lacs this year, after the dead sea or boredom we had last year...

My one Buddy's Dad retired near Glenwood... So we're currently thinking pretty hard about dropping the wheel house down on Waska, as he claims there's excellent pan fishing all ice season long.

What's the Access/Ridge and Plow potential situation around Waska (Probably closer to Glenwood than Starbuck.)

Usually 3 nice places to access the ice from the Glenwood end. City Beach, Lakeside Ballroom, and DNR landing. Heaves are pretty typical but the city takes off the edges and fills in with sand on a fairly regular basis to maintain the landings.

Plows you are on your own, unless you go out of Hunt's resort located near the DNR landing. There's usually a road to follow because there's a lot of houses out there all winter long.

Sunfish can be had all winter off the "wall" which runs midway beween the DNR landing and the Lakeside landing.

Thanks...

How's the ice bite for eyes?

*****

When it comes to heaves and ridges... Am I correct that there is no bridging on the lake?

So does the communal road just wind around all such obstacles?

*****

My Concern with plowing, comes from twice on ML when my house had 4 foot high hardened drifts separating it from the road.

I mean my F-150 is tough... But not that tough...

How common or uncommon is it for someone with a plow to be on the lake willing to scrape you a path to your hitch if you toss him a $20.

*I"ve kind of been pampered by the ease of ice services on Mille Lacs... So I'm wondering just how tough and rugged I should expect things to be?

Eye bite is spotty. I've had my best luck in the overnight hours when it quiets down on the ice. Either that, or find your own spot away from the crowds because the eyes are spooked with all the noise around the "wall".

Hunts resort will plow you out for a fee should you get stuck. I wouldn't count on having anyone willing to scrape you a path out on the ice, but that doesn't mean it won't happen. You're basically on your own, no more pampering.

are the "sunfish" true sunfish or was that generilized grouping vs. panfish ie gills, crappies & perch? Thanks for the response beer batter I was thinking that this was a very tight liped lake for one reason or another.

Yeah that's the same eye situation on ML... Day bite eyes (except for early ice) are rare... But at night they start showing up... Along with the occasional pod that I've named "A Walleye Storm."

So I take it this "Wall" is pretty crowded?

*****

What's the break in situation look like?

Does it happen often... Or is it a rare occurance.
(We don't keep anything of value in the fish house... But I still don't want the door ripped off the hinges or windows broken etc...

How socialable a scene is it out there... The crowd I'm used to on ML everyone watches after everyone else's stuff.

There is a bunch of houses fishing the wall, but usually it extends into about 15 feet of water or so.. I go w/ my portable and just gey away from the cluster of houses on this end, fish the egdes and if ya like even dunk a shiner or sucker, cuz the pike and bass hit also. Sunnies run decent sized and it's not too hard to get a limit of eaters, but no real pigs. I have caught em up to 9-10 inches but mostly 7-9 is the norm. hope that helps ya!.. If ya see a 1-man black portable-pull over style, itz probably me, as not alot of portables out there that i've noticed

Pike, yes they're everywhere near the wall. Definitely worth dunking a shiner during the day just for the action if nothing else. Keep a camera down there too, and you'd be amazed the number of fish swimming by that aren't interested in feeding during the day time hours. Walleyes are there all day, but just checking out the noisy conditions apparently.

The break-ins do happen unfortunately. Typically during the late night hours after bar closings (2-4am). Seems every year I hear of a dozen or so break-ins around the lake. People are pretty friendly, but I don't know of any sort of neighborhood watch program that covers 2-4am timeframes.

Come ice up, things do get tight lipped with the walleye bite but there's so many sunfish (yes, true sunfish) around the wall area that it's no secret to pass it around.

Thanks again guys for all the heads up!

No pout, crappies come to the wall during the evening hours (commonly referred to as crappie town)

Sweet... Walleye hitting at night, and waking me up is one thing...

But an Eel Pout hitting at 4:30 am, when I've got a brain pan full of stale whiskey... So he takes all 4 lines, and I get to spend 45 minutes of throbbing headache sorting things out while he wraps around my arm... Now that is something I will not miss about Mille Lacs!

*****

What other "Well Known" places are there (Not looking for your secret hot spot) besides "The Wall."

How's the deep water action late?

How is the perch (Jumbo) population?

****

Also I know that Ice out generally comes earlier to Waska than other lakes... But what about Ice Up...

Like last year at what point did you have driveable ice?

There's Bottle Bay, High School Hole, Priest's Point, and many others I'm sure. I'm not real knowledgable about the names of areas around the lake, but I'd suggest reading past year's posts to find out ice conditions and where things were biting. It's also hard not to notice the cities of houses that will congregate around the more popular areas.

Keeper perch? Not in my experience. Sunfish, crappie, walleye, and northern. You also have a chance at catching some dandy bass (both largemouth and smallmouth).
