That comes from too many catching and keeping. I've been going to both lakes for 26 years. Their are many people that keep the smallies in both lakes. Just check the cleaning house at Melgeorges. I'm not knocking it just stating a fact/observance from staying at the resort. They aren't big enough to handle the constant pressure every year. Still nice lakes to visit though. Their are secret spots that harbour bigger fish. The pike restrictions are having an effect on Elephant. Fewer tiny ones in the shallows. Hopefully fewer but bigger. We will be up there next week. Won't be staying in Tamaracks this year. It's a beautiful cabin.
Tamarack, you see that pike they are holding on the dock on Melgeorges front page on the website? Looks short of the slot. I hope they caught it off the dock and released and didn't bring in for a picture and keep it. I may have to stir it up a little with Carla. grin

Ron, Carla sent me an email about the pike and said it was 42". She said it was released...however, she didn't reply when I asked if it was caught off the dock! It looks like the same size pike as my buddy caught last year (a pic is on Melgeorge's fishing page). Maybe its the same one.

You are right that alot of people keep smallies up there. I've got to admit that my Dad likes to keep them (my mom actually prefers bass over walleye...go figure). Personally, my buddies and I only keep walleyes (smaller ones), bluegill and crappie. I can't stand cleaning bass and they don't taste nearly as good as walleye in my opinion.

I hope you have good fishing next week. My buddy Mastercaster will be staying at my cabin starting next Saturday. Maybe you will bump lines.

My wife and daughter like sunfish only...Can't blame them for liking those. The smaller smallies are pretty good though I have'nt had any in a long time. I like an assortment to eat myself. I will check in with Mastercaster when we arrive. Didn't see where jigginpig was staying?

Thanks,
Ron

fishing report for the week of July 19th through July 26th. Fishing for smallies, sunnies, and crappie was great. Walleye was extremely slow. They had a mayfly hatch about a week and a half before we came up. The walleye picked up on friday using nightcrawler on a lindy rig was the key for that. Work the weedlines. crappies at the tressel from 830pm til about 30 minutes after dark with a beetle spin. I will try and to post more in a little bit.

You stay at Melgeorges? Which cabin were you in? Someone left the day before us and gave us a cooler full of crawlers and a bottle of vodka. LOL grin

Glad to hear the smallie fishing was good jigginpig. My buddy is up there now with his father and all they do is smallmouth fishing. Any decent size walleye off of the weedlines?

Ron, it looks like the pike are still biting pretty good up there. I don't know if the pike restriction is a good thing...they might end up eating all the walleye!

Alot were a little on the small size, we did have a few in the 17 inch range. Most in the 11 to 13 inch range. I agree with the northern feeding on the walleye. One good thing is there is a good sunfish base in there for them, but that may go down also. just my two cents

Just returned from a week at elephant lake (July26-Aug2). My dad and I were mostly fishing for small mouth and pike. Sat thru Monday the fishing was pretty good with the big bass 3.4 and big pike 6.8 caught during that period.

A storm rolled thru early Tuesday morning and the fishing seemed to tail off a little. The evening topwater bite was the worst I have experined in 14 years at Elephant. Not sure if it was because of the cooler temps or just a slow year.

I did manage to catch a 3 lb walleye with a wacky worm.
