Spent Thursday till this morning covering alot of water dragging a lindy with a jumbo leech, could not find the walleyes deep so i trolled in 8-12' and smacked a ton of smallies(15-19")largemouth and sunnies.

Never been on the lake in my life and didn't have a clue were to start so i bought a lakemap and went at it and was really impressed with the bass fishery and the consistent size of the sunnies

I was out on Waska on Thursday, and spent a lot of time looking for eyes. Finally found them in the early afternoon in just over 20' of water. They were all caught within 200' feet of eachother using Lindy rigs. Hope this helps.

The reports above are pretty much right on, fishing on Minnewaska right now is quite good, and from a multi-specie standpoint, has been tremendous.

Walleyes did appear to move deeper the past week and are fairly active. Caught fish last Tuesday in 11-14 ft, with one coming in 16 ft. By Friday, the walleyes we caught were all in 17 to 19 ft.

The sunfish bite has been non-stop and the average size has been quite nice in 8 to 14 ft. We're catching them on bottom bouncers, spinners and a crawler w/single hook harness (actually fishing for walleyes and clipped a hook). They're so aggressive that they're going all the way to the spinner so you only need one hook. Bring lots of crawlers and fish the bouncer vertical while drifting or trolling (.5 to .8 mph) for sunfish (you want the spinner flashing). The kid's will have a blast. Stay just above the weeds, either sandgrass shallow or coontail/cabbage deeper and you'll catch sunnies non-stop along with a few bass. Caught a 8-lb. northern last week fishing for sunnies and a few walleyes as well in same area.

Seems each time out we run into an 8 to 10-lb. sheephead as well while walleye fishing. Seems like there's about 5-6 species biting every time out which tells you the walleyes are going as well, you just have to find them. Late morning to mid-afternoon has been productive using bouncers/spinner/crawler or Lindy/leech on a bouncer.

Are the sunfish still going on Minnewaska? Heading up today with the wife and would like to get some for a meal. If so, where is a good starting point? Starbuck side or Glenwood side? Are they sitting along the weedline? Wax worms and winter jigs work??

Thanks,

I am by no means much of a sunfish fisherman lately, but last time out with kids and looking for decent sized fish, the best sizes were in 12-14 ft off weedlines that were out quite a ways into the lake. The near shore weedlines had smaller fish. Any small jig, with about any bait, near any weeds, will catch sunny's here, just move around. We would catch a few decent fish and I suspect the activity draws in northerns which chases them off and then you must move again. The small fish come back first.

Thanks for the info. What end of the lake seems to be best for sunfish now?

Thanks,

sunnies: go out and fish where you would for walleye on edge of deep weedlines 14-18ft.
nightcrawlers any way you want to fish them
had luck just south of the glenwood beach and far out from woodlawns resort

Thanks for all the info. We went out on the Glenwood side by the beach and along the weedline in 12-14 feet of water. Caught lots of fish. Sorted through small ones to keep our limits. Using small leeches and pieces of crawler for bait.

Heading up towards end of August and early September for walleyes. Any thoughts on where the walleyes would be? In the weeds or out in deep? Anybody have any luck for walleyes in 4-8 feet of water in early september?
Thanks,

Sunfish are still biting, went out with my brother on the south side by Starbuck and had good luck in 14 foot of water. It was fun!!! Only downside were the boats full of old codgers that kept crowding in. If I can cast to your boat, you're too close!!! Its a big lake, be courteous!!!

I agree also with the reel team bass tournament being down there there were some big weights being brought it and 27 pounds taking 1st place and 22 to be in the top 10. The bass are biting also dont know much for walleyes guys said they were catching a few on jig worms in the weeds and a few guys getting them on crank baits.

yea i hear ya about the other boat crowding in. me and my dad were out there and we were nailing the nice gills just drifting in 14-15ft of water and other boats that saw us catchin fish would do like the same exact drift like 10 ft away from us. fishin was awsome though we caught walleye, sunnies, and i caught a 5 pound bass on my UL panfish rod with 4lbs line.

Sounds like the fishing is great. I also agree with the crowding. The boats do move in quick if you catch a few fish.
Were the walleyes biting decent when you were out there? Were they still fairly deep and what type of presentation seemed to work the best? Heading up this weekend and would like to find a few walleyes?

Thanks,

I was there sunday, only with no boat i was relegated to fishing the marina for bass, but it was fun!! I did see a dozen or so boats just outside the weeds out from the marina so fishin must be good there too.. If anyone has room 4 a skinny guy in a boat lemme know I will share expenses, the marina is fun to fish but it gets old after awhile!
