Found a lot of fish about 3-8 feet off the bottom tonight on the west side of the river. We managed to get a couple eye's to bite but, too small. Lost quite a few fish also. Trolling with leadcore with fire tiger raps did well too. However, it seemed like they were just nipping the tail end of the raps. They would be on for about 3 seconds and then gone. Nothing hit very hard. One of these days I will figure out this river. I think I had the right approach tonight but just didn't work out.

So what does everyone do to get the suspending eyes to bite?

They will bite, their off the bottom and active, trolling cranks works,I have caught them lindy riggen by only letting a certain amount of line out depending on the height

I have found that the best way to target these suspended fish is obviously either pulling cranks at certain depths or pulling spinners with snap weights. Experiment with the weights to get them to pull at the precise depth and it can be deadly.

Found a lot of fish about 3-8 feet off the bottom tonight on the west side of the river. Buck_hunter, found a similar situation along the Wisco shore this morning. Fish were sitting in 25-35' of water, most suspended up off the bottom pretty good. Long lined a firetiger taildancer and pulled a silver/black jointed shad on leadcore. Caught 2 fish on each (3 sauger and a short eye.) Had quite a few bumps that didn't hook up. Rigged south of catfish bar for a bit, picked up a nice 16" eye and another sauger in 25', both on leeches. The fish were more bottom oriented down that way, but many were still 3+' off the bottom. See you Sunday Fishin4a! LB

The suspended bite on the Croix right now is there but the fish seem to be very scattered. My best luck has been running #5 glass shadraps 75 to 100 feet out then clipping on a planerboard and letting out and additional 100 to 150 feet. I am guessing that I am only getting down about 10 feet. Doesnt seem to matter too much if I am over 20 or 40 feet of water.
