The small black flies (called gnats on the plains and sand flies by the Ely natives) are pretty well gone. The mosquitoes are horrible in many places but not out on islands in the middle of the lake. Ticks are still around. There seems to be a bumper crop of them. And of course the deer flies and horse flies are out this time of year in force.

If you hate the DEET, stop in at Mealey's Gifts or Ely Surplus. They're carrying a non-DEET organic insect repellent that I've had good luck with this year.

Get a thermacell from GM or Cabela's. $20 and $6 for a refill pack, it works wonders on the skeeters if there is little wind, I dont know about the black flies though. There is another thread on this in the open water forum on "bug control in the boat" for this product as well if you want to know more about it.

eh, just be smart about where you camp or fish - such as open lake, on points or in a slight breeze, NOT downwind of a swamp. bugs are bad this year, but you get used to them pretty quick
