Sticky reeds!

Hey everyone!
I have a timber rattler mallard call, and within the first ten min. of calling, it stick! How do i fix this problem for the future? Or do i just need new reeds? Any tips Or tricks to keep this from happening in the field?

Don't spit so much in the call.
About all you can do.
You can turn it around and blow through the insert to clear it out on occasion, or run take it apart and pull a dollar bill between the reed and tone board.
Get good at taking it apart and tuning it in the field.

Bring a few calls always works for me. Sure is frusterating when your call fails in the field.

Just curious, does windex really work, or just a guess? Just seems like if you put something wet on the reeds it would stick faster. Just my thoughts. Thanks for the tips though, ill try that, and the rain x , after i get new reeds and rough up the tone board a bit.

I read about it in a magazine but havent ever needed to try it. let me know if it works.

Here are some tips...
1. Dont put products on your reeds...PERIOD
2. Hang the call on your lanyard so the reed is vertical, it allows the spit to run off the tone board.
3. Most important, Before blowing your call, place the tip of our tongue against your front teeth and inhale thru your mouth, youll feel a cooloing sensation in your mouth (Go ahead try it) thats the moisture being evaporated! = less spit in the call!

1. hang the call vertical so the saliva can run out.
2. Dont blow so hard
3. buy another call so you have a back up.

It is possible that your reed is wore out. My open reed howler only lasted 2 years. It worked fine in warmer weather, but anything below 10-15 degrees it froze up alot. I got new reeds and now its a champ again. Just a thought. Also keep them in you coat when you don't need them.

If the reed gets bent at all that will also cause it to stick...my calls are all fairly old but I have only had one problem with a sticky reed and that was because it was bent. Otherwise I don't see why you'd be having problems...calls are designed to work when they're wet and in cold conditions. If you're having repeated problems just bring the call back and get a new/different one.

I bought new reeds for my timber rattler and tuned it myself. got it sounding really good, but it too sticks after a while. Not quite as bad as before though. And iv'e been focusing on how much spit gets into the call, trying to minimize that. Dont know what else to do. Dont really feel like buying another call, they are not cheap. I'll bring it back to the store and see what he thinks.

Don't put anything on your call, Rainex, windex, whatever, it doesn't work. Trust me I spit a lot into a call. Try out some calls that are stick proof. I got a Doc's DD-1 that absolutely DOES NOT stick. Doc Hull is the mans name.He'll take care of you. Buck Gardner also makes the spit-tech line of calls that don't stick either. I got a Double Nasty. Nice call. GUARANTEED not to stick or your money back. I own both of these calls and am more than happy with the non-sticking ability!

It is possible that your reed is wore out. My open reed howler only lasted 2 years. Youre reed is not wore out, chances are if anything, you could use a new cork. My go to call is over 10 years old, original reeds, and I hunt over 40 days a season. Your reed is fine!
