Phil lived his whole life being the tough guy and now he needs to take care of himself. Im sure he'll be back next year but i wanna think that he will change when he sees the footage from this year and how worried everyone was.

watched part of After the Catch last night (too tired to make it thru, will finish tonight- All Hail the TiVo!)
watching Phil describe what he had to do when he first talked to his sons post-diagnosis, {poor word usage!!!} ... I don't even think I blinked it seemed that intense. the emotional pain on his face was unreal to me. then when they cut back to the footage of the injury, and just before he was evac'ed out, look how pale he was vs sitting at the table in Pratty's. that was a man inches from death and only realizing it moments before it was too late to matter. I think here we've seen a real, honest case of a tough dude getting a mortality lesson like no one ever deserves to have.
Many people belittle "reality TV" for this reason or that, however I don't think that this season of Deadliest Catch can be subject to that kind of criticism. to me it's the kind of thing that can inspire a person to evaluate their own life, and how they live it, and what that life means to those around them.

I agree with you Grant. I just got to watch it last night and I really felt for him. I've done the cancer thing and it's hard to face. I think he's a lot worse off than I ever was. He did say the next two months will determine if he lives or dies. Also that his career may be over. That sucks for a very good man. I always liked him on the show. Feel bad for his kids as well.

i know. Talk about a life style change. I think that murray will captain the boat for a few years and then since phil still owns 1/2 the boat, one of his sons will take over. Whats your guys opinions?

It would be a nice lagacy but I wouldn't bet much on it.
Josh seems like he's there to prove to Phil that he can work and do a good job. Like maybe making up for being a he!! raiser in the past. I just think he's there more for his Dad than the business.
Jake's not mature enough yet by a long shot. He's still caught up in the "I'm 23 and making 100k a year, so I can do whatever I want" mentality.
Who knows? But it does seem strange to see Murray as the Capt.
