I recently put 15 lb powerpro on my trolling reels for walleye. I was wondering if this is bad for pulling stick bait beacuse it will pull out of fishes mouths easier?

thanks

My other question is what is preferred for trolling. console or tiller motors. I am going to be getting a new boat (16-17) foot and I am trying to figure out which I want.

Just make sure you have a softer rod and set the drag a bit looser so it just releases a bit when bigger fish hit. I troll with 12# power pro all the time and really like it when Im long lining. When I run inline boards I have gone to Big Game mono just because it holds on the boards better.

power pro is a good way to go. As far as a boat every one has their own idea. what you could do depending on when you are going to buy one is try to hook up with a few different boats. If you are thinking about the pond I wouldnt go any smaller than a 17'. Good luck.

I dont use a mono leader in something as thin as 12# PP but if you want to go ahead it wont hurt anything. Just use a back to back uni knot.

I would think that a mono leader would help to provide some sort of a "shock tippet" much like what we use for big game like tarpon, am I correct?

I use PP for pulling crank. Just set the drag correctly. I use a 4' mono leader joined with a swivel. One major advantage with the braids is you can feel and see the vibration.
If you foul on the tiniest of weeds you'll know.

A mono leader might help a little bit but your shock absorber is going to be the rod. Like Northlander said you'll be fine with a soft rod (slow action) with some attention to the drag. It also might be tougher to keep that slick braid holding true in most clips/releases if you runs boards. The same goes if you were to use that line on a downrigger. For the trout and salmon just tie a quality swivel onto the braid and from that run your mono leaders for spoons or whatever and if you run flashers/dodgers/etc. just snap that right onto the swivel with your mono leader behind the attractor.

For the boat selection in regards to trolling ease I would suggest a console. You'll have less room especially in the size boat you are looking at but I think it's more practical. It should allow easier access to your electronics which are critical to trolling success. Also the console would keep the driver out of harms way once the fish start coming into the back of the boat and rods are being set.

My above reply was directed toward trolling inland eyes. I don't use the same rods and reels on the big lake that I would inland. Just as I don't use my crank rods for throwing jigs. They're all rigged differentially also.

If your talking Superior I use my 8-9' board rods with mono.
Braid or not, every board and down rigger rod will be terminated with a ball bearing snap to its mainline. Flashers and Rotators get no leader, everything else gets a 6' mono leader. That would be a barrel swivel to attach to the mainlines snap swivel and a cross lock for the stick bait or spoon.

Your compromise in gear will be finding a dual duty inland/Superior boat. I'm a die hard tiller guy for inland eyes and have a 16' tiller that in 10 minutes can rigged for the big lake with all the bells and whistles. I also have an 18' I/O thats rigged specifically for the big lake, that boat would be the last boat I'd consider taking on inland waters for eyes.
If I had to get rid of one I'd keep the 16' tiller. So its up to you on your preference and where the boat will be used more.
If you go counsel I'd get a high thrust kicker, electric start, remote throttle, with t&t, and linked to the main outboards steering. To add more boat control and make it fish inland you'll want a electric bow mount too.
