We talked briefly about Spoon Plugging at the last get together and it kind of got my interest. While it is not a new tactic, "proven" old ideas and methods do find a way of coming back around again and I thought it would make for a refreshing post if you have time to put something together here.

I have been poking around Google just reading a little bit about Buck Perry and Spoon-Plugging. In fact I think I will order a copy of Buck Perry's book as it does sound like a good read.

Could you suggest a few sizes or colors of Spoon Plugs that think would work well in this area or is it more Buck's methods you have sucess with than the plugs ?

Thanks !
Hookey

Give me a little time on this one.

Yes Spoonpluging is a method and a Spoonplug is lure.

I have the 7 video tape series Pro Structure by Don Dixon based on Buck Perry's teachings. I usually watch them during the winter for some good reminders even though I am not a troller.

Great idea Ken.  Thanks for the suggestion.  MD will definitely have some input on this.

RFO has a great stock of spoon plugs...

They're like a daredevil in some respects but shaped more like a taco with a big bill.

That would be a lot easier then having to type this out. You see, I know more about compound miters then I know about sentence structure.

T,O if that were to happen, you would have to be the point man.

To understand Spoonpluging you have to understand basic fish behavior. If you put some minnows in your bathtub with only water in the tub all the minnows would go to the area of the drain plug becase it is different from the rest of the tube. some would swim away from the the main school at the drain plug but almost all would stay. Now if you were to place something else in the tube some of the fish would move to that area and some would stay at the drain with others swimming from one to the other. All you need is something different. Structure!

Buck Perry and Babe Binkelmen (not Winkelmen) ran fishing facts mag, back in the 60s and early 70s. Babe spent alot of time under water studying fish. If he would catch fish in an area he would later diver there to see what was in that spot that the fish liked. They called it structure.

Buck Perry if I remember right had a masters in Physics. So he had a mind that liked to break thing down to a science. What he came up with was Spoonpluging.

What he wanted to do was use a lure to run along to bottom hitting the bottom at times telling him if the bottom was rock, sand, muck or what ever (This was before the GREEN BOX). What he came up with was, (1) Using a stiff rod so you can feel what the lure was doing at all times (2) use a line with little or no stretch ( At that time the only line that fit the bill had a large Dia. he color coded it like todays lead core is, he called it No-Bow) so the line could telegraph what the lure is doing to the rod. (3) He needed a lure that would run at a given depth with a given amount of line out. The spoon plug.
Today we have line counter reels and lines like fireline that fill the bill. The smaller Dia. of these line will make the Spoonplug lures run deeper then it says on the box.

Structure and how fish relate to it was the key to this system. Buck said that fish spent most of there time in deep water. He called this "sanctuary". In this area the fish would feel safe and do vary little (kind of like me in front of the TV). When the fish began to feed they would start to move to shallow water (T,O's place). They found that fish would move to the shallow water using a given trail of rocks, points, steep drops and other things. When they reached these spots they would hold for a short time before move to the next spot shallower. This was structure on structure and the places where fish could be caught. Not all fish would move all the way up to the shallow water.

It's time to head to my "sanctuary" Go Twins!

I'll add more later.

Maybe they should have left him in the game, or not pinch hit in the 8th....

Great info Muddog...so a spoonplug, unlike a crank bait, will keep on diving as more line is let out?
