Headed up wed. just wondering what to expect.

Just got back from a whole week, fishing was not what it has been this spring, but it was still pretty good. 2 different bites going on right now depnding on the wind. One way is to drift or troll in shallow with worms or leeches the other bite is anchoring in 32 using minnows. Good luck and hope the wind is in your favor.

Windy weekend over the 4th. Not so windy you could not fish,
but windy enough to make it tough.

Big winds last week did a job on the shoreline bite in most
places.

My Brother and his wife fished out of Warroad Thursday and
Friday. Not too fast but they caught enough keepers for
a fish meal or two and not quite limits to bring home. He
said they caught lots of small fish. If the wind settles
down for a couple of 3 days things should improve around
Warroad.

I lost my tried and true anchor in May. Replaced it and
lost the new one, replaced that with an anchor that would
not hold the boat in the wind...............grrrrrr. (heck
with the gas, it cant afford the anchor overhead). Friday
afternoon tried to fish Twin Islands in the wind and could
not hold the boat still, moved to Zipple late in the day
and caught a few dinks. Friends of mine fishing there were
doing pretty well. Again, not being able to hold still was
costly.

Saturday morning my wife and I decided to fish over Pine.
From what we heard about Friday it was an easy decision
to make. Two different tactics worked well on Friday, pulling
crawler harnesses in 8 to 16 feet of water AND anchoring out
in 32 feet in the mud. I had to see if my soon to be ex
anchor would hold in the mud so off to the deep we went in
moderate wind. No problem keeping the boat stationary and we
jigged up decent Walleyes and Saugers stopping at noon one
shy of quittin time limits.

We met my brother back at Zippel to fish around for the
afternoon and it was just too windy to get anything going.

The deep water bite over Pine Island will last for a while.
Easy to do and there are about 20 square miles of good eaters
out there, Greenies and Brown ones with a few lunkers thrown
in. I'll be back!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any downrigging going on yet?

Going up Friday to Arnesons and I was curious if anyone was jigging with frozen shiners still. Anybody been out on the reefs and done any good.

The bite out in 32 feet over Pine is almost exclusively
Jig and frozen Shiner. Big big bite.

Lunger. There is some downrigging going on but the jig
and shiner bite is sooooo good the charters are anchoring
up filling the coolers that way instead. Riggers are
having some success.

Curt - I have never bought frozen shiners before - do all the bait stors in baudette / wheelers point have them? How many come in a package? How much are they.

Heading up Thursday - and staying at a relatives place

The bait stores all have them. Be sure that you get
the local frozen emerald shiners. I know Log Cabin
Bait north of Baudette will have them, Dennys in Roseau
will have them too.

They come in baggies with a dozen or 20 in each bag. There
is no standard since everyone is bagging there own stash.
Cost is anywhere from 3 to 4 bucks depending on the size
of the bag.

You really want a small amount in the bag, they thaw out
very fast and begin to rot very soon after. Keep them in
the cooler once thawed and try not to let all your bags
thaw at once.

Get a few bags (remember to try and keep them frozen as
long as you can). My wife and I used 2 bags Saturday morning
from 8:30 to noon just the two of us. Dont bring 10 bags out
in the boat with you unless you can keep them frozen or you will
use all 10 bags that trip. By mid afternoon you will be
having a bit more trouble keeping the bait on the hook because
they continue to get softer and mushier.

Use a longer shank jig and hook the shiner through the mouth,
out the gill and gently thru the meat above the spine. This
seems to be the best way to keep them on the hook. At first
the bait will not want to bend that far but soon it will not
be an issue.


Dirtking, weather permitting, this will absolutely out fish
any and every other tactic this week.

Slow today on the mudd bite. Can you let me know where your anchors are so I can not hook em? Just kidden. Long day for me today, Went east, 16m., 12m.,stony,east shore. Things are on the move. Small fish on shore lines. Fish flies have come home from the Angle and when you get to 16m. to Stony look out for those black flies and deer flies.

Just got back from a week long house boat trip. The walleyes were biting like crazy. We did not find any bigger ones, but we never fished deeper than 22ft. Most early trip eyes came shallow near shorlines, then we found them in 22ft {more mid lake humps}. We had 2 Muskie follows, but never boated one between six guys. The follows came on a mid lake rock pile that was sticking out of the water. Got a bunch of northers in some back bays with cabbage. I was surprised to not raise a muskie in the cabbage areas we were fishing. All in all very good trip.
