im just wondering how good the south branch of the root river is around the preston area? has anyone fished around there recently?
also, which is better for trout the south branch of the root or the south fork?
im just trying to get sort of a heads up before i spend the many of $4.00 gallons of gas it takes to get down there.
thanks fellas.

I haven't fished this area recently. However, the south branch is a fine stream and I have caught many trout between the Forestville area and Lanesboro. There are also a number of smaller feeder streams to the south branch. I can't speak to current conditions as I haven't been down there for several weeks.

i only have limited experience fishing the area, but i've gone to forrestville a number of times...... without the book in front of me, i'm not sure if that's the south fork or south branch, but for my money that's the better of the two...... stopped by the other and fished a long section of it last summer..... seemed rather warm mid-summer and we caught like two fish all day long..... then went to forrestville area the next day and slammed em all day as well as trout run.....
there are some deeeep holes on the other south root though, so i'm guessing with the warmer water there are some big fish..... if you try it, i'd bring some buggers and try to dredge something up from the depths.....

i was actually able to get on a decent pattern to catch fish, unfortunately that took most of the first day to figure out. The next day we hit it hard with our newly discovered pattern and did quite well until we ran out of that specific fly. A quick trip up and out of the valley found us at gander mountain where we loaded up on the fly we needed, 20 minutes later we were quickly down in Elba catching more fish in the whitewater river.
We did good, we quickly skipped over the forestville creek as it was to clear for my likings. The South Branch of the Root was amazing. We hiked several miles and fished lots of good holes and runs. The BWO's were in full effect but we stuck to the deep pools and runs trying to catch the big guys. Although we didnt catch and biguns we did catch a few gooduns.
Looks like next weekend we'll be back down in the area again with a full box of our so called "hot fly(s)".
i did talk to a couple of gentlemen that caught their limit of the forestville creek late late in the afternoon. Seems like it wouild be the best time attack that creek with its clarity. I did see tons of trout in it but by the time i saw them they had defintely already saw me. One guy did well on BWO's and the other guy mentetioned a really big green nymph.
well, tight lines to all Daniel

i was down in this area last weekend..... loads of fun.... fished the root between preston and forrestville, fished duschee creek, and then forestville creek just upstream of the confluence.....
stayed in pretty much one spot on the root all afternoon.... fishing was steady on pheasant tails and scuds-- occasional fish were rising but i only got one on a caddis..... probably not taking caddis, as there were some monsters making huge splashy rises-- didn't see any bugs in the air.....
duschee is a little meadow spring creek gem.... found an eased section and fished about a quarter mile of it..... caught a handful of 3-4" browns, then found a slightly deeper stretch and found some 6-8" browns and brooks..... water was bone chillingly cold..... wading across an ankle deep section was painful.....
forrestville was nice as well..... didn't really fish it long enough to figure it out, but threw on a large adams and hooked into a very good fish..... lost it, then had a refusal from an even bigger one that rose up outa the depths, hovered under the fly and then slowly sank back down...... beautiful wooded creek, tight casting..... good time.....
also checked out mystery cave when we were down there, very cool...... a note for anyone heading to the area, the bridge into forrestville across the root from the east is out, the only way to get into the park is from the west......
