I will be up there in about three weeks. Just wondering what lure purchases should I be making before I come up. Thanks

Jiggin, would you mind giving me some feedback after your trip? I am looking for a new lake to take my family to in August and I have read some nice things about Elephant. Where are you staying?

I have been going to Elephant Lake for 40 years and own one of the cabins at Melgeorges resort. For walleyes, this is definately a crawler lake. A simple lindy rig with a plain hook is your best bet. If you are fishing for bass, spinner baits (best color is yellow), senkos, jitterbugs, or torpedos all work well. Best choice for pike is also a yellow spinner bait.

tkettel,

I don't normally get up there in August but one of my friends goes up the first week of August every year and swears that August is the best time for fishing all species. Although the walleye are not as plentiful as late May/early June, you can catch some nice size ones in August. Bass and panfish are always excellent later in the summer.

Our cabin is part of Melgeorges Resort and Elephant Lake Lodge. A link to Melgeorges website is right under the Vermillion Elephant Pelican Regional Forum link. My cabin is my username...Tamarack. There are smaller cabins to rent if you don't have too many people.

Thanks Tamarack. Well maybe you can help me with another question. I have a group that ranges from 6-9 that have been fishing together for 20 years. We started out on Basswood and switched to Sag 8 years ago. We have also gotten soft and gone from portaging in 14' foot motor boats to staying in a cabin with nicer boats. Problem is Sag is not producing and Basswood is probably not an option anymore, what are your thoughts on Elephant for a group trip in early June? We fish walleyes and would like to find a lake that is not overly commerical or developed.

tkettel,

I have been going up to Elephant Lake with
Tamarack for the last 14 years and the fishing has always been good. We have mostly fished in late May, early June and early July.

I have gone up twice with my father in late July & early August and the bass & pike fishing is excellent that time of year. My dad and I don't target walleye, we like to bass & pike fish but I usually sag a walleye or two on a spinner bait each year.

For Bass: Spinner bait, Senko & topwater
For Pike: Large Spinner bait (yellow), large swimbaits in a perch pattern.

Check out Melgeorge's for cabins, the owners are great people and they run a quality operation.

I will be up there this year July 26 - Aug 2

Have a good trip,
Mastercaster

Ive noticed that the bass in elephant (wife's family has a cabin on it and blackduck) and blackduck tend to run on the stunted side. The pike in blackduck are pretty big, though.

SledNeck,
Where at on Blackduck? My Mom and her Husband just bought a place at the end of black duck beach road. We should head up to pelican some time. I could use a lesson on senko fishing.

Like the last place on the west side/ north shoreline(water access only). I'm probably going this weekend then the bigger bass will start biting on vermilion and I usually fish there every weekend until they slow down near the end of august.

tkettle,

I think early June (the first two weeks) is the best for walleye fishing on Elephant. In fact, I have already reserved my cabin for the first week in June because of that reason.

As for the resort, I think you will really like it. It has been a family run resort for over 70 years...last year, the owner retired and sold the lodge to his daughter and son-in-law. He then sold the individual cabins to persons who have been coming up there for a long time and created a common interest community. The good thing is that the place is still run the same (as a family fishing camp instead of a commercialized resort), but all the new owners upgraded all the cabins and also put in money for a new docks, boat ramp and other improvements.

Anyway, if you decide to go, let me know ahead of time and we can exchange emails. I'd be happy to share some tips with you on where to go and what to use.

I finally was able to get to the computer again. THanks for the advise. I was getting a little worried that this was a tight lipped lake. I normally use jigs and troll where I'm from. I do enjoy the spinner action though. Just another reason to go and buy some more takle. the wife will love that. I will post when I come back. I leave the 19th and will be back that following saturday. If my laptop picks up signal up there I will post while I'm there. Thanks again for the help. I just want to out fish the in laws. you know how that is. lol
