It's been a few years since I've been on tonka, but I use to fish the predawn early morning bite quite a bit. Though I never did that great, but one pattern that I did find was a deep weed line trolling bite in the predawn hours. I think these fish are in transition. Not sure if they're going from shallow to deep; or deep to shallow, but I'd find them for a short period of time before sun rise. Once the sun comes up the eyes disappear, and the snake northerns start biting. Try trolling Browns bay area with something that runs the deep weed line.

Exactly what he said. Walleyes slip up into the weeds to feed then head back down to deeper water during the day. Feeding windows are tight and location shifts so I have found trolling/rigging to be the best way to find them. Don't forget to try casting stickbaits like floating Raps over the weed tops. I'd add Brackett's point and Diamond reef to the location list. It will be hit and miss. But you should catch some nice fish. I use deep diving Husky jerk-baits and Tail Dancers and #7 shad raps. Have also found the Original HotnTot (metal lip) and Salmo Hornets to be effective. If you are setup for leadcore larger floating Raps are very good also.

I agree with you guys (on the tight window), however, I don't want to. I wish they would feed during the day in the deep water, but they just don't want to cooperate. Marked some deep fish last night in Crystal Bay amongst the pleasure craft when the sun was still high and went to work on them and only pulled perch.

If you have ever dropped a camera down in Tonka the size of the 6" perch schools is amazing. No shortage of forage for the walleyes there. Makes for the tight feeding windows and no day bite. It's a regular Mickey Dees for those eyes. Just drive thru and go home.

not all walleyes leave the weeds, have caught large eyes in the weeds during july midday. They were born and raised in the weeds and don't need to leave that often if at all
