I'll be out on the croix in the near future and am bringing the other half along. I would like to get into some crappies and/or white bass so she can stay entertained while I try for some 'eyes. any help would be appreciated.

You shouldbe able to catch all the crappies you want in Bayport Bay (i believe that is the name). But i don't know how well the eye bite will be there. I had heard alot of 12-14 inch crappies but i found they were 10-12 inches (which is still very good eating). I caught a few white bass while drifting the current with a jig. We also caught a couple small eyes. This was a about a week and a half ago. But i'm sure this will still be about the same.

You ought to be able to spot suspending white bass by looking for the sea gulls. The bait fish (shad) are driven upward by the schools of White Bass. The Gulls see the shad on the serface and flock to the spot diving into the water to feed on the shad Just look for the sea gulls flocking to a specific spot on the water. Drive your boat nearby and cast a small jig near by. Let the jig sink down to the right depth and start reeling in silvers.

I've been thinking about hitting the St. Croix Memorial Day to find some eyes, but this white bass thing sounds interesting as well since I've never fished them. Are they good tasting fish or are they more rough like a rock bass? (Forgive my white bass ignorance) If they are like smallies they would be fun!

Let's just say they are for catching, not eating.

Whitebass are great table fare, they fight like a smallie, look like a crappie and are pretty tasty when prepared correctly. Fillet them just like a panfish, skin them then take all of the darker red meat off till you have a nice white fillet. Drop them into a container with milk for a bit and batter and fry like you normally would a crappie. If you are going to let them sit overnight then put them in a bowl of either milk or salt water, pat dry and coat with your favorite breading and fry them babies up. I have heard they are good smoked as well but haven't went that route with them yet. Tunrevir~

I want to target white bass around the afton area, are there good spots around there? I was going bass fishing with a buddy on Sat, but founf family is comming over, I can take the young ones out to give them some fun and get my fishing fix. Any advice around the Afton area would be nice.

That's kinda where I go cannon, I launch out of the bluffs and fish there to Prescott. I know I've pulled some out, but not fast and ferious. I would love to hear of some spots to get on them just for some fun.

Donbo, that there is fightin words:) I have caught my share of both eyes and crappies but neither fish compares with the whitebass in fighting ability even 10+ pound walleyes. Since you have an affinity to them that just leaves more for the rest of us:) Good luck out there! Tunrevir~

Nothing like a 3 to 4 lb white bass on the other end of the line. I'd say it's probably got better fight then a 10lb walleye or a big smallie. They aren't bad for the table either especially the smaller ones. But if some of you (DonBo) don't want to catch them that's fine more for the rest of us like tunrevir said. I've seen some boats actually take off when a school of whities start going, oh well- their loss.
