Good wading stream/river for smallies?

I'm lucky enough to be going to Alaska for a fly fishing trip at the end of June. Unfortunately, I've become pretty rusty with my fly casting skills. Also, I need to teach my girlfriend how to fly fish.
Can anyone suggest a good wading river to target smallies? It would be preferable to be within 1-2 hours of the twin cities.

I know the Root River has some smallies in it, as well as some decent size trout. Its right about a 100 minute drive from the cities in Southeastern MN. Very scenic area too.

2.5 hours to the east is the Flambeau and they can be had there on topwaters as well as eyes, crappies, pike and muskies. Closer to home, I'd hit the upper reaches of the St.Croix above the dam as well as below. You will get a mixed bag on the croix which means it could be just about anything under the sun. Good luck out there!

If the water levels on the mississippi get as low this year as last year did you will have a huge stretch of river to work with. Right now they are high but maybe by the middle of the summer.

Head to St. Cloud. Both rivers up there have produced for me in the past.

Tunrevir~ how wade-able is the criox north of the dam? waist deep? how far above the dam do you need to go? hwy 70?

You will need to go aways up from the dam to be able to wade the upper croix. It is actually more of a boat water all the way up past the ski hill to Nevers.
One other river that is very wadable is the Snake around Pine City.
