I'm looking for a couple of ideas on where the float fish the Mississippi or the Rum on Sat. I was thinking of about a 3 hour float. Anyone have any ideas for a trip this long and put-ins and take-outs? I was thinking maybe Clearwater to Monticello or Monticello-Elk River. Not sure where to look on the Rum. I don't run rivers too much in my kayak, any idea on how many river miles 3 hours would be? I know it depends on current and how good the fishing is, just looking for some ball park ideas. Thanks

The current is still way up in the Mississippi, and the water level is a bit high, but has dropped a little bit in the last couple of days .Be careful if you go out, floating hazards abound in the high water levels, right now.Remember that smallmouth bass is closed right now, so it's walleyes and northern pike if it's gamefish you're going after.

The DNR has maps you can download from

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/canoeing/rumriver/index.html

It also has a link to water level reports

http://www.dnr.state.mn.us/river_levels/levels.html?id=rum

Then there's the USGS site that gives you historial data

http://waterdata.usgs.gov/mn/nwis/rt

A 3 hour float is a hard one if you are just going down river. The rum tends to be about a 5 to 8 hour float between most take in and pull outs. You might try St. Francis Park to the public access south of there. That should only take about 4 hours with todays currents.

They are moving fairly fast, so be carefull.

You can put in off 22 and float down to the County park off 7, that should be under 3 hours.

Thanks, we ended up having to cancel the trip this weekend. I'll keep the info for the next time though.
