One thing that I have noticed about smallies is that the soft ray dorsal on some river fish comes to a tip, while some river smallies and all lake smallies I have caught is rounded like the one in the picture.

I caught a pig smallie on Mille Lacs on walleye opener. Weighed in at 4lbs 15oz. Just a mere ounce from being 5lbs. The thing was huge and full of eggs or crawfish, I didn't feel her gut but she was fat. I'm guessing she was getting ready to spawn in a few weeks with the surface temps at 49degrees.
