Thanks. Any ideas for what condition are going to be like? Are those bullrushes going to be up and green? Thats typically what I like to fish up there, but I've never fished this early in the season up there.

With everyone doing Catch and Release these days, it's a wonder WAY more people aren't Bass fishing around here instead of Walleye. If it's just the fight you want, a Bass is a lot more fun to catch, pound for pound than a walleye. We've been hammering the Bass right along with the walleyes already this year, and the Bass are way better fighters. Personally, I'm a fish eater, so you won't find me actually trying for them muddy things....

Fishermatt,
I tell you, when I catch bass in deep water, 15+, or suspeneded over deep water, they taste pretty [PoorWordUsage] good. A pound and a half bass in mid summer that's been in deep water for a while tastes as good as a crappie to me. What I do with them is fillet up a few under 2 lbs, and grill them. They're really good that way, and I use them in fish tacos. I think there something about their meat that is really conducive to grilling.

Crappie, that's another mushy fish I don't care to eat. I guess I'm spoiled on Sunfish and Walleye.

Do the bullrushes up there usually green up for the bass opener?

They won't be this year. The reeds probably won't even be above the water line, and the pads will just be coming up.

I'm a little concerned about this... What type of cover will be available for the spawn? I'm assuming they'll be in middle of the spawn when I get up there this weekend, or even pre spawn?

I wouldn't be too concerned. There'll be plenty of cover. There's always a lot of old reed from last season. The pads should popping up some. Cover won't be the problem. The problem will be water temps. The water's probably in the high 50's on smaller lakes, so it will be a litte hit and miss.

If I had to bet, I'd say they'll be up, and eating. Especially with warm weather from here thru the weekend. The water temps should spike up over the next three or four days.
