anyone fishing the cannon river? I'm sure it's still Very high, but am thinking about trying to hit the river after it comes down a little bit. Any stretches I should definitely hit?

I fished the Cannon from Cannon Falls to Trout Brook for opener and the walleyes are biting. Water isn't to bad. Crawlers.

You can watch the water gauge in Welch (google cann river at welch gauge) If the level is above 6 it can be a waste of time.

Good luck

The vertical drop from Welch to Red Wing is about half what it is from Cannon to Welch so expect to paddle a lot more. If you are looking for walleyes the closer you stay to Cannon the better. If its cats its all good.

Hey catmaster, did you happen to camp at pine creek by chance? Did you see many other people?

We didn't see another canoe that I remember but the rain most likely scared everyone away. Were you on the river that day or Sunday? When we pulled out there was a jeep parked there so I figured someone was behind us.

I've been fishing the cannon river for 30+ years and i bet catmaster ran into some small post-spawn male walleyes. The bigger females are usually found downstream from Trout Brook in slower, deeper pools. The stretch from welch to red wing is much better. They do run upriver into the stronger current to spawn in the spring but by the opener they're long gone. The males soon follow. Cannon Falls to Trout Brook pretty much turns into rough fish heaven for the summer... haven't had good bass action in 5 years.
